Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 011

20 November 2014

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

I initially had absolutely no idea what to do for this week’s pages.

Sure, I had a couple of ideas and prompts scribbled down, but I didn’t feel particularly inspired by any of them.

In the end, I found this printable from One Little Bird’s Hopscotch journaling cards while rummaging through my stash and decided to write a note to self since I’ve been feeling rather unmotivated this week.

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

I splattered Mister Huey’s on the background, handwrote “Keep Going” on a tag, stamped the date, and called it done.

This is my first time spreading a design over two pages in this art journal so far, and I liked it.

Creative Conversations no. 017 | chatting with Stephanie Bryan

19 November 2014

I am constantly inspired by Stephanie’s work – she combines pretty paper, photos, and stories so beautifully in her projects. I know you will enjoy reading more about Stephanie and her creative process as we chat today. Welcome to the blog, Stephanie!

Ameliawrites-StephanieBryan

Tell me about yourself. Hi! I’m Stephanie and I guess I would call myself a “creative”. I’m a momma to two sweet kids and a wife to a husband, who I’m pretty sure can be counted as my “third child”. I love taking pictures, usually of our everyday and my children, and I love documenting our life. I’m passionate about recording our memories in some form or fashion! I usually let my creative energy speak for itself, and you can usually find me creating mini albums, art journal pages, layouts, Project Life pages or some type of craft!

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I can remember and recite song lyrics like it’s my job…seriously. Weird, huh?

Ameliawrites-stephaniebryan-8

What do you do to express your creativity? I find my creative energy ebbs and flows a lot, so I usually focus on what I find “intriguing” and fun at the moment. My first outlet is typically photography. I love taking photos, playing with the light and experimenting with my camera. I think I feel most “free” when I’m behind my camera, which maybe sounds a little weird. These photos usually inspire me to create something paper related (mini album, Project Life spread, etc.). And if all of my photo/paper creative energy runs dry, I will usually turn to knitting, painting or something else “hands on”.

How did you get started doing this? I ventured into the paper crafting world through Project Life after my son was born in 2010. I found myself swamped in photos, memorabilia, letters, notes and thoughts and really didn’t know how I was going to keep up with all of this stuff. I stumbled across Ali Edwards’ blog and her Project Life pages and was hooked! From there, I started graduating into creating layouts, mini albums and art journals. I found the process so freeing and creative and I loved that I was able to express myself and my feelings through paper.

Ameliawrites-stephaniebryan-3

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I think I love the feeling of that burst of creative energy. I love when I get in a groove and the ideas just come and come. I’ve learned that this feeling comes and goes, so I tend to run with it when the ideas are there!

Who or what inspires you? I am inspired by so much and so many people. I love getting a peek into other’s creative process. That’s super inspiring to me! I’m also incredibly inspired by photography and the light within photos. There’s just something that speaks to me creatively when I see an incredible photo!

Ameliawrites-stephaniebryan-1

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I remember feeling this panic years ago when I felt like all of my creative juices had run dry. What if I never had another idea? What if I never created anything ever again? The panic and stress was definitely there, but I carried on and found that yes, that energy does run dry, but yes, it comes back again. I don’t really stress or worry about it anymore. I usually use that time to try something new, like weaving or film photography. I find that changing gears is an awesome way to jumpstart those creative juices.

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I think I have an internal drive to create. I’ve always been a creative person, but I don’t think that my energy really came alive until I started paper crafting!

Ameliawrites-stephaniebryan-7

Describe your creative style. My style is light and airy with fun pops of color. White is always present. Always.

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. My typewriter
  2. Sewing machine
  3. Wood veneer
  4. Vellum
  5. Resin flowers

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I am definitely an early bird. I don’t always necessarily like waking up early, but once I’m up, I’m good to go! I find that I work best during daytime when there is a lot of good, natural light. Once the sun goes down and my craft room gets dark, I’m useless!

Ameliawrites-stephaniebryan-6

What project(s) are you currently working on? Right now I’m working on filming a bunch of videos for the 25 Days class at Studio Calico! I’m super excited to be teaching this class this year! The December Daily album is my very favorite project of the year and I can’t wait to share my album and ideas with the class!!

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Hmmm….I think I would be the white crayon. It’s light and neutral, and you don’t really know it’s there until you need.

What is your favorite quote? “You don’t have to better than everybody else. You should strive to be better than you ever thought you could be.”

Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

For this week’s pages, I had the left-hand page completed a couple of weeks ago, but I finally decided what I wanted to do for the right-hand page so I’m showing you both of them together today.

Inspire others

I had an out-of-focus Instax photo that I didn’t want to waste and my art journal was the perfect place to put it! I layered a MAMBI sticker over the Instax photo and I adore how it looks.

Oh shoot

I’ve had these mistable Studio Calico camera stickers for far too long and I was happy to find a place for them in my art journal.  The “Oh shoot” stamp from Avery Elle was a serendipitous find as I looked for the perfect sentiment to pair with the cameras.

Simple and good, yet again. Just the way I like it.

4 life lessons from blogging

12 November 2014

The truth is that blogging teaches you about life. Here are 4 life lessons.

With the blog just turning three on Monday, I spent some time reflecting on the past three years of blogging. During this time, I’ve learned so much about blogging, about myself, about life.

I could tell you a long list of things to do and not to do, things I wish I knew when I started blogging, etc. But those are for another day.

When I think about it, it’s interesting to realize that blogging isn’t just an online thing – it changes you and teaches you about real life.

Here are four lessons about life that blogging has taught me:

  1. Be consistent.

This is something I’m constantly working on, but this was the year I really started to blog intentionally and regularly. It’s been so neat seeing things grow and how this blog has moved forward.

And in real life, consistency is so key in getting things done and achieving goals (one of the reasons why I’m doing my habit challenge).

  2. Be happy for others.

It’s easy to get caught up in the comparison game and compare your success to another’s. But remember that everyone has a different beginning, a different story. So set aside the comparison and just simply be happy for how well others are doing.

And oh man, this one is definitely equally true online as it is in real life.

  3. Reach out.

Whether to form friendships, give a word of encouragement, or ask for advice, don’t be afraid to reach out to other bloggers. You might need to step out of your comfort zone. But even if you’re unsure, the worst you can get is a “No”. And most of the time, you’ll find that fellow bloggers are more than happy to help and respond.

Beyond the interwebs, I’ve found this to be true even in real life. When you look beyond yourself and reach out to others, you may be surprised by the results and how well things turn out.

  4. Spread the love.

There are so many reasons to love blogging, but a huge and rewarding part of it is the community that you get to be a part of. I’ve been so blessed by the friendships I’ve formed in this community, and spreading the love by mentioning fellow bloggers that I enjoy and appreciate is just a tiny way to show my gratitude, and support the people in this community. Spreading the love is just one way of giving back to a community that has blessed me a ton.

And even if life gets ugly and hard, turn around with kindness and keep spreading the love. Because I like to remind myself that “everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”.

Now it’s your turn – what has blogging taught you? Share them in the comments!

P.S. The birthday giveaway from Pretty Organised and Big City Quiet is still open – don’t forget to enter for a chance to win their amazing products! You don’t want to miss it!

Three years + a giveaway! (closed)

10 November 2014

Celebrating 3 years of Amelia Writes!

I’m super excited today because this blog is three years old!!!

Kinda cray, right.

I guess that’s pretty old in this internet world where things are constantly evolving and nothing stays the same for long.

I get a little sentimental thinking about my blogging journey and how this blog has grown with me through the past three years.

This blog has seen me turn twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two, and most recently, twenty-three. It has recorded the things I’ve made in scrapbook layouts (yes, I actually used to make those!), cards, and Project Life spreads. It has documented the lists I’ve made, the numerous recipes I’ve tried for 20, 21, and 22, and DIY projects that I’ve executed.

Blogging has brought me new friends, taught me to step out of my comfort zone, showed me the importance of working hard and doing what I love. Safe to say, my life wouldn’t be the same without this blog.

It has truly been a very good ride.

I’m so grateful for the people I’ve met on this journey, for the support of friends and family, for the goals I’ve set and accomplished, for the dreams I have and strive toward, and for the readers (that’s you!) who make this journey as meaningful as it has been for me.

And certainly, today wouldn’t be a party without presents!

So as part of the celebrations this week, my lovely friends Caylee and Rachel contributed, not one, not two, but three prizes for three winners in a giveaway especially for you guys.

Making new friends is one of the most rewarding things about blogging, and these ladies constantly inspire me with who they are and what they do – including the products they create for their Etsy shops! I know you will love using these products.

For this week, I dug around and found these older colorful “love” tags, which I was inspired to use. I added gold sequins and Studio Calico’s chipboard hearts for some flair. And I stamped an arrow from an Avery Elle stamp set and hand wrote “Do everything in love”.

Yep. Sometimes we all need that reminder.

Creative Conversations no. 016 | chatting with Laura Rahel

5 November 2014

When I think of Laura, I think of florals and white and pretty paper, which is pretty much how she describes her style too. Laura constantly inspires me with her projects and I loved getting to know her better – I am sure you will too!

Ameliawrites-Laurarahel

Tell me about yourself. I’m a 24 year old lover of natural light photography and shelter dogs. I love documenting memories and I believe in creating the beautiful, passion filled lives we want for ourselves. I am a natural light photographer. I run two etsy shops, one of which sells my Project Life designs; the other is where I showcase and sell the floral crowns I design.

I’m a dream chaser. I’m a lover. I’m a woman who doesn’t compromise on her passions and instead pursues all of them. I’ve been married and divorced. I have Unexplained Female Infertility. And sometimes I blog about all of the above.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? My middle name is Rahél. Pronounced “Ray-elle”. I am pretty much obsessed with it. People always try to correct me and say “You spelt your name wrong.” Or “Didn’t you mean ‘Rachel?’” After 24 years with the same name, I am 120% confident in my ability to spell and pronounce it correctly; usually I don’t even bother explaining that to people anymore.

Also, when nobody else is home, I pee with the bathroom door open.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-12

What do you do to express your creativity? I express my creativity through creating things. Project Life spreads, traditional scrap booking layouts. Designing floral crowns or Project Life cards. I love a good DIY project. I like to write. I love photography. Anytime I see the opportunity to create something beautiful, I try to do so.

How did you get started doing this?
I’ve always felt the innate desire to create things, I just wasn’t very good at it until recently. Working with florals is something my grandmother passed along to me. Then, I started exploring natural light photography so I could take photos of my floral crown designs. When Pinterest came around, I discovered Project Life, which I started a little over a year ago. Whenever I see something I love, I like to try and give it a go to see if I could be good at it. I like to test my boundaries and explore my creative abilities.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-09

Who or what inspires you? What inspires me – love, stories, beautiful things, grass and trees and lakes and flowers.

Who inspires me – oh this list could be so long but I’ll stick with my number one. Mara from A Blog About Love. Mara, despite infertility and divorce, has found a way to live so beautifully. She is so kind and forgiving and loving, the life she and her now husband have created together is so inspiring. She inspired me to change my story. When I was going through really hard challenges with my infertility and divorce, their story inspired me to change. To stop being sad and angry and disappointed and to become this fulfilled, happy, passionate person that I am today. I put in the work, but she inspired me to realize that I could do it, that my happiness was in my hands. I realize this isn’t a creative inspiration source, but she is probably my number one life inspiration and that’s important.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-11

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I like to work on things in cycles when I do feel inspired to do them. I’ll work on Project Life everyday for two weeks and then once I’m not feeling it anymore, I’ll go a month without touching my album. When I’m not inspired anymore, I’ll stop and I move on to something else while I’m inspired to work on it. No pressure to do things I’m not currently inspired to do.

The best part of having so many creative outlets is that I’m always inspired to do something. So if it’s not Project Life, it’s photography or mini albums or designing things.

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? For me, creativity is an innate quality ingrained into my being. It’s a part of who I am and something I need to do. It makes my heart and soul happy to create beautiful things and share them with people.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-08

Describe your creative style. Bright, light, white. Polka dots, florals and stripes.

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. Pretty paper
  2. Paper trimmer
  3. At-home photo printer
  4. Sharpie
  5. Sequins

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? Night owl for sure! 10pm-2am are always my prime hours of productivity.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-05

What project(s) are you currently working on? My Radical Self Love Bible. Catching up on my 2014 and 2013 Project Life albums. A huge hand painted wooden sign for our dining room.

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? White.

Ameliawrites-laurarahel-13

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Teleportation. Experience the entire world.

What is your favorite quote? This always changes. A couple years ago, I got a tattoo that says “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” I still love the quote but it’s becoming rather popular right now so of course my favorite has changed. Right now, I’m loving “The older you get, the more you realize that it isn’t about the material things, or pride or ego. It’s about our hearts and who they beat for.”

Follow Laura on Instagram, her blog, Pinterest and check out her Etsy shop!

30 Day Habit Challenge

4 November 2014

Plan of Action for a 30 Day Habit Challenge | Amelia Writes

Here’s the thing about habits: Bad habits are so easy to start and so hard to break. But good habits are so hard to start and so easy to break.

Strange, huh.

For several months now, I’ve been trying to incorporate the habit of waking up earlier. But truthfully, I haven’t been doing well with it. That’s mostly because I end up hitting the snooze button and sleeping in longer than I should (I’m not the only one right?).

So when I saw that Caylee was starting a 30-day habit challenge (accompanied with her official Habit planner printable set), I decided that it was the perfect time to actually make this habit a reality. Plus, I totally appreciate having a community and the support and accountability that comes with it.

I originally planned to start on November 1 and continue all month long. But I really needed the extra sleep this past weekend so I wasn’t able to get up as early as I would’ve liked.

So instead, I used Monday (yesterday) as my Day Zero and Tuesday (today) as my Day One. This means that the thirty days will go a little into December, but I don’t mind. I figured it was better to start on a strong note, instead of feeling defeated right from the start.

Inspired by Caylee, I worked through Tiago Forte’s Design Your Habit course on Skillshare and came up with my specific plan on Day Zero.

My plan of action for the next thirty days is based on Tiago Forte’s 11 milestones, which he covers in the course:

PLAN OF ACTION

  • Identify my new keystone habit

My habit is to wake up earlier. For me, I’m working towards waking up before 8am during the first week, and then adjusting the time so I wake up before 7am before the month is over.

  • Choose an existing anchor habit as your new trigger

After I hear my alarm, I will get out of bed.

  • Choose a reward for completing your habit

I get to cross the day off my tracker when I successfully complete my habit for the day.

  • Choose a reminder

My primary phone alarm will ring at 7am, and again at 7.15am.

  • State your implementation intentions

When I hear my morning alarm, I will wake up and get out of bed because I believe that waking up early helps me to be productive during the day and be a good steward of the time I have been given.

  • Make your habit easy to start by identifying your small wins

  1. Get out of bed immediately
  2. Snooze once
  3. Wake up before 8am
  4. Wake up and read
  5. Put my feet on the floor
  • Identify your loopholes and closers

“I didn’t have enough sleep last night and I’m too tired.” – Sleeping in and waking up late makes me go to bed late, which leads to a vicious cycle for my habit.

“I missed my alarm. Just five more minutes.” – I have lots to do today; the earlier I wake up, the more time I have to complete my work and get things done, instead of wasting time in bed.

  • Modify your environment

I place my phone across the room so I have to physically get out of bed to turn off the alarm.

  • Choose a habit tracking approach and tool

I am recording and tracking my habit in my Pretty Organized Habit planner.

  • Select an accountability system

Caylee is my accountability partner and I’ll be checking in with her during the challenge.

  • Evaluate your results

At the end of the challenge, I’ll blog about it with updates!

I think this could be the best thirty days yet, and I’m excited to see how this next month will go.

Let’s do this.
