Stay Organized in 2015 | my blog planner set-up

14 January 2015

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

During the second half of 2014, I started to be very intentional about planning blog posts and getting them ready for the blog.

Then things started getting overwhelming and I realized that I needed to get organized.

Enter: the Pretty Documented blog planner

Like I shared last week, I’m already using the Pretty Documented planner for my daily organization and scheduling (which I love!). So it was quite a natural decision for me to use the Pretty Documented blog add-on for blog organization.

As I tried to figure out how I should plan out my blog planner, I read Andrea’s post and really like how she organized everything, so my planner is loosely based on her structure. After all, if the Queen of Organization has it all figured out, why not take a cue from her instead of reinventing the wheel, right?

Similar to the Pretty Documented planner, Caylee provides a ton of options in the blog planner so you have plenty of formats to choose from to make something that works for you.

Tip: Figure out your blogging process and decide which pages you will use from there.

You can also use the steps listed here to customize your blog planner.

Here’s brief overview of how my blog planner is currently set-up:

2015 blog planner set-up

After the blog cover, I have an index of pages in my planner.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

Then the details of my blog, elements, sketches, and blog planning. This is the “big picture” stuff – the overall of my blog.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

On the editorial calendar page, I list all the various events and holidays that I want to plan blog posts for.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

This is followed by a monthly section.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

I have a calendar view and list view that help me to plan blog posts for the month. I like having both formats because it gives me a different idea of how that month’s blog posts look like. Not sure if that makes sense; I guess that is just how my brain works.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

After the monthly overview, I have the posts and social media pages where I write the blog post titles for that month and get a good overview of what I need to work on, what is complete, etc., and where I’ve shared my posts. This page is especially helpful when I need to figure out what I should do when blogging hour comes around.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

This is repeated for all the months until December.

Then I have three pages of ideas and features.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

And a stack of post planning pages.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

I use the post planner pages to write down initial ideas and thoughts when my phone or computer aren’t close by or easily accessible. It also gives me a tangible way of recording and staying organized for all the blog posts I write, instead of having random post-its or digital notes scattered everywhere.

Note: This part of the blogging process differs for everyone. My fellow bloggers Andrea and Caylee like to hand write their posts and leave pages for those, while I like typing mine out in Evernote (or emailing a draft to myself) because I edit a lot and my hands just can’t keep up with my brain sometimes.

There’s no “better” way to write your posts, just the right way for you.

The last section is for guest posts and everything related to that.

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

How to stay organized with a blog planner in 2015

So there you have it! My blog planner for 2015.

If you want to be intentional in blogging this year, now is a good time to organize and get started since we are only a couple of weeks into the new year – definitely better sooner than later!

P.S. Caylee and Andrea also have great posts on how they use their blog planners.

All words, photos and enthusiasm are my own. I am in no way compensated for this post. I just love what Caylee and Vanessa did so much that I wanted to share it with you!

All the Memories | 5 reasons why you should be a memory keeper

12 January 2015

Great reasons to start memory-keeping in this blog series

We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun.

That’s how 2015 started for me – making memories with my favorite people without even realizing it.

And now that we’re back to the routine of life, I look back fondly on those memories and feel immensely grateful for all the memories we made, and how those memories will soon be documented in my albums for us to look back on.

And that’s what makes me love being a memory keeper: Recording the moments and stories that would otherwise be lost and forgotten.

I anticipate making many more memories in 2015, and I don’t want them to just disappear with time.

That’s why I’m choosing to be intentional about memory keeping in 2015. And so should you.

5 reasons why you should be a memory keeper:

#1: Memory keeping helps us to remember what we would otherwise forget.

We all have a tendency to forget, which is the very reason why we should document. Since we’re only a couple of weeks into the New Year, now is the perfect time to start documenting 2015 before the year slips by. With memory keeping, you don’t have to look back at 2015 and wonder where the year went because you will have it all documented.

#2: Memory keeping teaches us to embrace life.

Because life is full of ups and downs, good and bad things, memory keeping has taught me to embrace even the not-so-good moments of life and give them a place in my albums, if needed.

#3: Memory keeping gives life new perspective.

Instead of seeing the every day as routine and boring, memory keeping lets me look at the every day with new eyes and gives me a greater appreciation of today. This is especially true since life changes and I anticipate my every day routine being different even just a couple of years from now. With memory keeping, I learn to be thankful for all that happens and what gets documented.

#4: Memory keeping lets me tell my story.

I love hearing a good story and I love that memory keeping lets me tell mine.

#5: Memory keeping lets me express myself.

Whether through photos or writing, memory keeping lets me express myself creatively, which is one of the many reasons why I choose to be a memory keeper.

And there you have it! Five reasons why you should be a memory keeper.

Now is the perfect time to be thinking about how you will document this year’s memories. If you’re still on the fence about memory keeping this year, don’t hesitate and jump in now!

After all, there is truth in what Karen Lamb said:

“A year from now, you will wish you had started today.”

Don’t wait for one year from now. Start today.

P.S. I also liked this post on memory-keeping.

Friday Favorites no. 052 | links from the week

9 January 2015

Ameliawrites-Fridayfavorites-9Jan15

Flashback to last week during family vacation and the last of Christmas decorations.

  • Love what Olya and Laura are doing.
  • Definitely finding a way to use these soon.
  • This is totally hilarious in a really good way.
  • Words for the New Year.
  • I think I need to do this more this year.

So we made it to the end of the first full week of 2015! And I must say, I really like how this New Year is feeling already. While this week started out a little bit rough and I miss the relaxing holiday times, I’m optimistic about how the coming weeks will be like.

Plus, I’m definitely excited about my plans for this weekend, before I need to tune in to back-to-school mode.

Until then, happy Friday! Have a good one xx.

Stay Organized in 2015 | my planner set-up

7 January 2015

Welcome to the first official work week of 2015!

I didn’t plan on starting the year with being sick. But since I’m battling the flu bug, I might as well rest while I can. C‘est la vie, friends.

On the bright side, school doesn’t start until next week so I still have time to get my act together and start being organized, instead of having the typical post-holiday havoc.

Last year, I used three (!!!) notebooks to help me stay organized. I had one for school assignments, one for my weekly schedule, and one for my daily to-do lists. I found a system that worked for me, but I could definitely do with fewer notebooks.

Then in October of 2014, I was super excited to find out that two of my creative friends Caylee and Vanessa had collaborated to come up with a beautiful planner for 2015. You can be sure that I hopped on that bandwagon quickly!

Ameliawrites-2015planner

So this year, I’m happy to be using the Pretty Documented planner to help me stay organized and sane when life gets busy (and it will, soon!). While I won’t deny the immense convenience of digital calendars (we use Google calendars for all our family events), in the end, I still love pen and paper for my weekly and daily planning.

Not only is the Pretty Documented planner pretty to look at, but I love how flexible and customizable it is, which was a big reason for me when I purchased it.

And now, I get to combine those three notebooks into one this year. Whew!

After purchasing and downloading the planner, it’s time to put everything together. I love that there are so many options, which makes things truly customizable for you.

How to customize your planner:

1. Look at the options available.

2. Plan and decide on what you need.

(Do you need daily, weekly, or monthly pages? Or a combination of everything?).

3. Note which pages you need to print.

4. Trim your paper.

(I used A5 paper with my laser printer.)

5. Adjust your printer settings.

6. Print away!

7. Punch holes and insert pages into binder.

Those are the steps that I took to put my planner together.

This year, I am housing my planner in a Muji two-ring binder in A5 size. I love the clean look and the binder is thick enough for all the pages I have.

And here’s an overview of how everything looks.

2015 Planner Set-up:

I basically have my planner divided into four sections.

Ameliawrites-2015planner

1. Yearly section

After the 2015 cover, I have a year at a glance, followed by birthdays and holidays.

Ameliawrites-2015planner

Ameliawrites-2015planner

2. School section

The School section comes next, which is where I will have a list of all my school readings and assignments once school starts (no photos of those yet).

Ameliawrites-2015planner

3. Daily Section

The Daily section is for my daily to-do list and a breakdown of that day’s schedule.

Ameliawrites-2015planner

4. Monthly and weekly section

On the back of the January cover page is a monthly overview, with a page for that month’s goals.

Ameliawrites-2015planner

I actually like the monthly double sheets (like what Vanessa and Caylee did). But since mine are already all printed until the end of the year, I’m just sticking with what I already have.

Ameliawrites-2015planner

After the monthly overview is a weekly section, where I have four or five weekly pages (depending on the number of weeks) for that particular month. I printed the monthly and weekly sections in correspondence with the remaining months, all the way until the end of the year.

I haven’t fully figured out the tab situation yet because I wanted my planner to be printed and functional before the year started, so at least I already have that settled. But I’ll definitely put in an update once I figure out what I’m doing for that.

I’m excited to use my planner and make 2015 super organized, with lots of efficiency and productivity!

Let me know, how are you staying organized in 2015?

P.S. You can also see how Caylee and Vanessa set up their Pretty Documented planners.

2014: this was the year

31 December 2014

Ameliawrites-NYE2014

What a year 2014 was.

This was the year I formed friendships through Instagram.
This was the year I ran my personal best 10K.
This was the year I focused on building this blog.
This was the year I made memories at USS.
This was the year I celebrated three years of blogging.
This was the year I learned about the important things in life.
This was the year I learned to trust.
This was the year I tightened my friendships in real life.
This was the year I pressed on through a challenging year at school.
This was the year I discovered new places and went on new adventures.
This was the year I pushed my creativity.
This was the year I documented life.
This was the year I grew in new ways.

This was the year I saw God be true and real all over again.

2014 was such a good ride in so many ways.

As the clock ticks toward midnight and we ring in the New Year, I am so thankful for all that 2014 was, and I am so looking forward to all that 2015 will be.

Happy Blessed New Year, friends!

May it be the best year yet.

P.S. I’ll be taking the next few days off and I’ll see you again during the first week of January!

Let’s look at December

30 December 2014

6 ways to get ready for a New Year

29 December 2014

Get ready for 2015 with these 6 ways

And just like that, Christmas is over.

I really wish Christmas lasted longer than just a day, but I hope you had a wonderful day celebrating with loved ones and remembering the true meaning of Christmas, just like I did.

Now, we are only three days away from the New Year.

Pretty crazy right.

I love how each New Year is a brand-new chance to build new memories, to chase new dreams, to learn new lessons.

But a new year is also scary in some ways because nothing in the future is certain. Despite all the uncertainty that is ahead, I love getting ready for a New Year.

So as we look forward to all that is head, here are six ways to get ready for 2015.

1. Reflect on the past year.

What was 2014 like for you? What did you learn? What experiences did you have? I like using these questions to help me reflect on the year.

2. Decide what will change.

Now that you’ve had 365 more days of experience, what would you like to change in the New Year? Since there are always ways to evolve, change and grow, now is a good time to determine how 2015 will be different from the year before.

3. Start new habits.

Choose which habits you will form in the New Year and get excited for them! I embarked on my first habit challenge in November and I look forward to more new habits next year.

4. Set goals.

Whether you call them goals, resolutions, or intentions, the New Year is a great time to start anew with a fresh, clean slate of things you want to accomplish in the New Year.

5. Be accountable.

Find people who will keep you accountable for the goals you have set for yourself in 2015.

6. Get organized.

Whether it’s physical or metaphorical, leave the clutter of the past year behind and figure out how you will simplify your life in the coming year. Organize your life and get ready to start 2015 afresh!

So how are you getting ready for the New Year?

Friday Favorites no. 051 | favorite posts of 2014

26 December 2014

It’s been such an incredible journey writing for this blog, to say the least.

Especially this past year, I’ve loved watching the blog grow, and getting the opportunity to interact with all my readers (that’s you guys!). And through all the hours of writing and editing photos, this blog has definitely become one of my favorite parts of the year.

With today being the last Friday of 2014, I thought it would be fun to do a #flashbackfriday of sorts and look back on some of my favorite posts.

So in no particular order, here are my picks for ten posts that I especially enjoyed writing this year.

Enjoy!

1. I worked through the 22 list, which was an interesting journey.
