Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 003

Another Thursday, with another round of art journal pages to share with you! Since this week is also the last Thursday of September, we all get to link up to the monthly Get Messy art journal prompt on Lauren’s blog.

Here are the three pages I made this week, including a page for September’s prompt.

Twenty-two

With my 22nd year just past, I wanted a record of all the lessons I learned at twenty-two – always a good reminder for me to keep learning and growing.

The 4×6 card is from Basic Grey’s Highline paper pad, and the stamped arrows are from a Mama Elephant stamp set that I stamped repeatedly on the background.

This was a fun page to create. I colored with Gelatos on the background, then wet them with a brush to get a watercolor effect. I like parts of this page, but I’d like to get better at blending the colors.

Let’s get lost

This might be my favoritest page this week (or month) since I love everything about it – from the white space, to the watercolor look, to the wood veneers and enamel dots. Oh, and that quote.

For this page, I used September’s journaling and art prompt to create:

Sabine’s journaling prompt What would you do if you lived more adventurously? made me think about traveling and the implications of not being afraid of change and trying new things. I love being adventurous, but sometimes I also get scared and prefer to stay in my comfort zone instead. Since life is really just one big adventure, this page reminds me to live adventurously in all aspects of life.

For the art prompt, I tried a simple (but new to me) technique of using Mister Huey’s to create watercolor. Since I don’t own my own watercolor set (yet), this was a good way to achieve the same effect without using actual watercolors.

I read this thread over at Studio Calico to give me an idea of what I was getting into. While there are several ways of doing this, I chose to use the suggestion of dipping a wet paintbrush into the mist bottle and using it straightaway on my paper. This was so much fun to do and a great way to get more use out of my mists; I’ll definitely be doing this again.

It seems like watercolor was quite a theme this week, but oh so much fun.

Remember to check out the other pages in the September link up!

  1. This is so cool! I’ve seen these Art Journals around the internet. I may even have to start one myself. It also seems like a good way to use up scrap supplies you wouldn’t want to add to your layouts.

  2. Amelia! These are pages are AMAZING! I love the colourful page with numbers, it’s gorgeous, but my favourite would have to be the last page, something about it, I just love.
