5 ways to show love to people in your life

10 February 201611 February 2016

Love doesn't have to be flowers and chocolates. Discover 5 ways to show love to people in your life, this Valentine's Day and all year round.

With the main Chinese New Year festivities behind us, it seems that the next “holiday” is Valentine’s Day. While Valentine’s Day has never been a much-celebrated holiday around here, I like to use it as a time to reflect on how I show love to the people in my life and how much they mean to me.

Since the mention of Valentine’s Day typically evokes images of flowers and chocolate, I challenged myself and discovered five ways to show love, sans your typical Valentine’s Day items.

I might add that if your loved one enjoys flowers and chocolate, I say go for it! But if you’re looking for some more unconventional ideas, here you go!

Ways to show love (without flowers and chocolate)

  1. Spend time.

Sometimes, the greatest gift and demonstration of love is just spending quality time with them. Plan a fun day, intentionally disconnect from social media, and enjoy being in the company of those you love.

  1. Write a thoughtful note.

It doesn’t have to be long or cheesy. Just a meaningful, handwritten note expressing your appreciation for your loved one and how much they mean to you can go a long way. You can make your own quick and easy ones, or print some fun ones online.

  1. Cook a meal / bake something.

Food connects people. And if your loved one enjoys food, there is no better way to show them your love than to make or bake their favorite meal or food.

  1. Listen.

In this day and age of instant gratification, many distractions, and short-attention spans, active listening is learned skill. But your willingness to put everything aside to listen to your loved one will show them how much you care.

  1. Serve them.

Find out if there’s anything that they would appreciate you helping out with, whether it’s washing the car or running some errands. Sometimes, actions dospeak louder than words and the little things go a long way.

Which way will you choose to show love this year?

DIY | Quick & easy (last-minute) Valentine’s Day cards

DIY Quick & Easy Valentine's Day Cards

I’ll be honest and say that I’m typically not much into Valentine’s Day. I mean, why pay exorbitantly for flowers, chocolates, and dinner at a fancy restaurant, right?

But I’m definitely all about love – giving love, showing love, celebrating love, loving people. And Valentine’s Day is pretty much a perfect excuse to do that.

Since Valentine’s Day is now only a couple of days away, I made some simple Valentine’s Day cards, which you can quickly put together before Valentine’s Day arrives!

I love giving handmade notes. Because after all, love isn’t just about all the fancy stuff, but the stuff that comes from the heart.

DIY Quick & Easy Valentine's Day Cards

Valentine’s Day Card DIY:

  1. Trim kraft cardstock to 4×6 and score.

  2. Fold the cards (so you end up with 3×4 cards) and round the corners.

  3. Splatter with white mist.

  4. Punch out scalloped circles and die cut hearts (I used the Becky Higgins die set).

  5. Add foam dots and adhere.

  6. Stamp a sentiment (I used Heidi Swapp and Amy Tangerine stamps).

  7. Violá! You’re all ready to add your note and send love.

There are so many ways to add variety to these – you could stack the hearts in a row of three, or swap out kraft for white cardstock. But I wanted to make everything into a nice, neat set so I just used different patterned paper.

I’ll be pairing these cards with homemade Valentine’s Day cookies and I’m excited to give these away this weekend!

True Love

14 February 2014

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.”

– John 3:16-18, The Message

Now that is true love – giving up His life in love so that we could live instead.

May you always embrace His precious love.
Happy Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day | love notes

6 February 2014

With just a little over a week to Valentine’s Day, it’s time to get cracking on those Valentine’s Day notes!

Truth be told, I’m not into Valentine’s Day at all. But I do love any excuse to print and use cute printables to share with my family and friends.

There are plenty of Valentine’s Day ideas floating around Pinterest. But I loved these printables and printed them out pronto. Here’s a bonus – they’re free! So grateful for people who share their creativity on the internet at no cost.

I ran out of paper at the end and didn’t get to print out these Valentines from A Fabulous Fete and A Pair and A Spare.

But I will, as soon as I get my hands on more paper.

I hope your day is lovely indeed!

Of love and Valentine’s.

Things have been really busy around here with the first few days of Chinese New Year just past. So there’s hardly time to get into the Valentine’s Day mood. I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to all things Valentine’s, which I didn’t have any time to look at. Maybe next year I’ll get to do/make some fun stuff.

But really, love is for every day of the year so I’m just rolling along with it. This Valentine’s Day, I’ll be spending lots of time with the people I love most and getting ready for a new season of life around here. And each Valentine’s Day, I’m reminded of my God who loves me beyond measure, more than any other could.

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
– Jeremiah 31:3
