Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 004

2 October 2014

It’s kind of hard to believe that I’ve already been art journaling for an entire month! And although I’ve never art journaled prior to this, I’m thoroughly enjoying the entire process. Considering the fact that I don’t do much traditional scrapbooking anymore, I really like how art journaling gives me a different creative outlet to experiment and have fun.

Have less. Do more.

Another thing I love about art journaling is that it gives me a place to use all the pretty paper I collect but have no idea where to put. Take this Ferragamo ad, for example. I loved the shoes but would have had no where to put it, if not for my wonderful art journal. Somewhat ironically, I intentionally paired the ad with the “Have less. Do more.” quote as part of the reminder to have less stuff.

Spectacle.

Although I typically have a starting point when I art journal (like a photo or some words/a quote), all I knew that I wanted to do for this page was use this set of spectacle stamps. So I did. And I kept it super simple, which I actually really like. It also turns out to be rather fitting page for me, I suppose, since I do have quite the love-hate relationship with my glasses in real life.

I like how October is starting out.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 002

18 September 2014

It’s almost hard to believe how quickly each week seems to pass by. But yay for Thursdays!

This community is so encouraging and heartwarming – I’m so thankful for all your sweet comments on last week’s art journal pages. You all continue to inspire me to create and make things.

Unlike last week’s pages, this week’s pages were a case of having a good idea with not-so-good execution. My idea of these pages definitely looked much better in my head. But as I’m often reminded, art journaling isn’t meant to be perfect. So here are my imperfect pages this week. Embracing imperfection all the way.

Beauty of Holiness:

I have to admit, what you’re seeing is really version 2.0 of this page. I originally did something different and wrote a whole paragraph for this blog post about not loving the page and trying to roll with it. But I just could not settle with how much I disliked it. So I pulled the page apart and did it all over again. The patterned heart and gold sequins are part of the original page though, which I do like.

Although I’m not totally in love with the page yet, I think it’s growing on me because I definitely like it much more than I did the first version. Plus, I love the colored background, which I wouldn’t have thought to use if not for my original page. Mistakes can sometimes be good things.

The idea of using my Dymo label maker came from seeing Kathleen’s sneak on Instagram. So credit has to go to her for that one. While my Dymo font definitely doesn’t look as cute as hers, I’m glad for the reminder to take out my dusty label maker again.

Wish:

My lack of stamping skills are very apparent on this page. But I wasn’t going to re-stamp an entire page just because it didn’t look perfect. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I used some tiny wood veneer stars from Studio Calico to distract from my imperfect stamping. And I thought that the stars tied in nicely with the theme of wish. I also adhered the 3×4 card with washi tape and included some hidden journaling underneath.

In the end, I actually don’t mind this page, imperfections and all.

11 September 2014

After so many weeks of watching and admiring all the amazing art journal pages of these incredibly creative ladies from afar, I finally emailed Lauren and Caylee about taking the plunge.

Here’s a secret: I’ve never art journaled before, which made this a little scary, yet rather exciting at the same time.

But I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge. I think Thursdays just might be my favorite day of the week now with all this creating.

Let God:

I was inspired by the handwritten lettering that I saw on Pinterest and wanted to replicate it in my art journal pages. I wrote out the letters with a pencil and cut them out, splattered some mist, added washi tape and twine, and boom – done.

Embrace Change:

To me, butterflies symbolize change as they morph from caterpillar to butterfly. So I pulled out some Mister Huey’s and butterfly masks to capture the reminder I had for myself to embrace all the unexpected situations of life. I also happen to love how the colored mists combined into such a pretty shade – totally unplanned.

I’m excited for next Thursday already!
