Project Life 2014 | week 3

10 April 2014

AmeliaWrites_PL_week3

Week of: 13 January to 19 January 2014

What happened this week: I started Spring term this week, fell sick, got better, and went to my brother’s commissioning parade. That was the highlight of the week, so these photos are all exclusively from the weekend.

AmeliaWrites_PL_week3LHS

AmeliaWrites_PL_week3LHS2

Techniques used: The weekly title cards remain the same. I ended up using lots of filler cards this week because of my lack of photos. But I loved being able to use up my growing stash of filler cards! Without planning to, yellow, grey and aqua/teal were the main colors of this week’s spread.

Thoughts: I loved the color scheme of this week’s spread. And I’m still keeping things simple because I need to catch up!

I’ll be back soon. More spreads in the making.

Creative Conversations no. 001 | chatting with Vanessa Perry

9 April 2014

I’m so excited to welcome Vanessa to kick start the Creative Conversations series today! I first “met” Vanessa through Instagram and I was so blown away by her amazing calligraphy and creativity. Seriously, her handwriting is amazing, and it looks even better in real life. I’m so grateful that she agreed to be a part of this series and for the friendship that we’ve formed through Instagram. It’s so inspiring seeing her creative work and I’m sure you’ll be just as inspired!

vanessa-perry-001

Tell me about yourself. I’m Vanessa. And my last name is Perry, not “documented,” haha. I’m 25, and I live in sunny southern California. I am a Project Life enthusiast and I like to dabble in handlettering (calligraphy and brush script).

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? When I drive alone in my car, I belch* out my best version of Adele. My best performances include steering wheel drums. 🙂

* yeah, I’m tone deaf.

What do you do to express your creativity? I work on my Project Life album, calligraphy, and brushscript.

vanessa-perry2

How did you get started doing this? What a great question! I can probably trace the beginnings of my creativity all the way to elementary school when I fell in love with painting, so much so that I spilled paint all over my overalls. (Sure sign of an artist in the making – paint on overalls.) Haha!

But to really answer the question:
Throughout my life, I have always loved paper crafts and mixed media. My boyfriend alone has three scrapbooks, a Moleskine of doodles, and a Smashbook. I started creating for myself while I was going through a personal difficult time last year. It first began when I started taking pictures of things that made me happy and I discovered Project Life as way of documenting/scrapbooking, which taught me to really pay attention to the details in my every day moments. Around the same time, I also picked up a paintbrush and started painting words. This peaked my interest in handlettering, which led to calligraphy and brush script. All these things were my own form of therapy. Ever since then, I’ve just become really passionate about being creative.

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I enjoy the process – having to rummage through all my materials to find the right embellishments, making a mess, changing my mind a million times on a layout, thinking of the right way to honor a memory, practicing calligraphy. The hard work adds to the satisfaction of completing a project.

vanessa-perry6

Who or what inspires you? Easy. Happiness inspires me. If something or someone makes me happy, I have to remember it. A quote, a photograph, a souvenir, something that takes me back to that moment and how I felt.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? Go outside, do something, make plans, have a conversation. I have to keep my senses heightened to feed myself inspiration.

When I feel like I haven’t been creative lately, I get out all my supplies and play around with them until I can put something together. I know when I’m stuck when a layout or a spread just isn’t cutting it out for me. I have to walk away, take a nap, or go on a run. Refuel myself; think about my vision and how I want to execute it.

vanessa-perry3

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I want to inspire, the same way being creative inspired me.

Describe your creative style. Simple with a few surprises. There is nothing too complex about my work, but I do like adding one detail that adds a special touch, something to be remembered.

vanessa-perry1

Name your top five favorite tools or products. In no particular order:

  1. Studio Calico wood veneers. – They’re on every single one of my spreads.
  2. The Project Life Midnight Edition core kit. – The neutrals make it easy to pick and choose cards to match my photos, I don’t have to worry too much about coordinating because neutrals match everything.
  3. Vellum. – I love printing on vellum to add a layer of journaling.
  4. Manuscript Leonardt nibs – I know the best nibs can be ordered online, but I haven’t ordered any off of my wishlist yet. These ones can be found at Michaels and I’ve been enjoying them for practicing.
  5. Studio Calico February Sugar Rush kit – I’m not a subscriber (yet), but I ordered February’s kit out of curiosity. It blew my mind and I might just be getting April’s kit. Studio Calico puts out some good stuff and I love that the kits come with coordinating embellishments; it makes it easier to put together a spread. I’m definitely a fan of SC.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? Night owl, definitely.

What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m currently working on Project Life for 2014 and a hybrid scrapbook/ art journal.

vanessa-perry4

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Mint green.

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Teleportation, makes for easy traveling.

What is your favorite quote? I don’t have a favorite of all time, but this one by Oscar Wilde has been speaking to me lately: “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

Be sure to follow Vanessa on her blog, Instagram and Pinterest to keep being inspired by her creative work.

Thank you for joining us today, Vanessa! It’s been such a pleasure having you.

Introducing | the Creative Conversations Series

8 April 2014

creative-conversations-introduction

In a world where we’re constantly connected by our gadgets, having a conversation with someone can be a beautiful, sometimes rare, thing.

But I’m so thankful for the opportunities that I’ve had to make new friends through places like Instagram. So in an effort to get to know the people that I’ve connected to, been inspired by and become friends with through the inter-webs, I’m pleased to announce the new Creative Conversations series!

I’ve asked my friends from all over the world to be a part of this and I’m so grateful that they agreed to! They’ll be sharing their creative processes, random facts about themselves, and much more! I’m so excited to begin this and I can’t wait to introduce the first person in the series to you.

I’ll be featuring the first Creative Conversation tomorrow so remember to check back and join in the conversation!

How Social Media Shouldn’t Be Used

7 April 2014

Amelia-Writes-Social-Media

This week, this thought via Pinterest and this blog post by my friend Vanessa sparked my thoughts on social media.

In a time when social media takes up so much of our lives, I couldn’t help but consider and evaluate how I use social media and how I shouldn’t.

Social media shouldn’t be used as a place for competition or comparison.

Sometimes, a lot of times, I forget why I started using social media in the first place – to share what I love and do with everyone. Instead, I get caught up with how many page views I get on my blog, or how many likes or followers I have on Instagram. It’s a never-ending cycle.

This is especially easy when I see my favorite bloggers/Instagrammers getting many more comments, likes, or followers than I have, or ever will. They seem to do better, dream bigger, be more creative, get more exposure – they always seem to have it better than I do.

But the truth is, social media isn’t about how big or popular I am. Or as Vanessa wrote, social media isn’t a popularity contest. It isn’t about being at the top or being the best. It isn’t about knocking people out of the competition so we emerge as the winner. It’s about being connected to people, friends and a community I wouldn’t have otherwise.

When I get sucked into the unhealthy game of competition and comparison, I begin to lose sight of why I do what I do in the first place. After all, as Mark Twain once wisely said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

So while it’s easy to get caught up with the less important things, don’t let it.

Social media is a tool, not a game to be won.

Social media shouldn’t be used as a means of validation.

To me, this reason naturally follows from not making social media a competition. And it might be the hardest one for me to remember.

Often, social media becomes a competition or a place of comparison when I start to seek approval or recognition from my followers or following. Instead of doing what I love simply because I can, I look to them to tell me what I should do so I get more approval. It becomes more about me – what I can get, rather than what I can give.

Yes, it’s always nice to be recognized, to be appreciated, to know people enjoy what I do. But sharing what I love to do on social media isn’t about hearing other people tell me about myself, how good I am, or how much I can do. Rather, it’s a place, an opportunity for me to contribute, to make new friends I wouldn’t have known otherwise, and to be part of something bigger through a community.

I know bloggers always talk about community, so much so that it’s become somewhat of a cliché. But now that I’m beginning to experience it, I know what that means. Having a community of people who love the things you love, who enjoy the things you enjoy, who are inspired by the things that inspire you, who understand the struggles you face because they go through the same things too.

The friendships formed through social media are blessings in and of themselves. And if they appreciate what you do too, that’s just a bonus.

While it’s easy to forget, remember that you aren’t a lesser person simply because you don’t have as many likes or followers as the “celebrity” Instagrammers or bloggers. How much acceptance or recognition you gain through social media doesn’t determine your value and worth.

Regardless of whether you have a million followers, or none – you are still unique, still special, still YOU.

The struggle is real. But once you step away from the need to be validated by others, you find a freedom in sharing what you love doing, simply because you can.

A lot of times, I don’t consciously choose these thoughts. Instead, they creep in, uninvited and subtle. But whether I let these thoughts entertain me, that’s my choice.

I write very specifically in my context, where my most-used social media platforms are this blog and Instagram (and sometimes Twitter and Pinterest).

So this post is really a reminder to myself more than anyone else, a reminder to have the right focus and use social media for all the right reasons – for friendships, for community, for sharing what I love regardless.

I’m just here to do my best and to do what I love. Everything else is a plus.

Week of: 6 January to 12 January 2014

What happened this week: We spent the week on vacation in Hanoi. I hung out with my friends at the River Safari, and we ate good food (again).

Left-hand side:

Techniques used: The same weekly title cards as last week. I ran my journaling cards through the printer again. Instant photos from my Instax mini 25. And I also used more neutrals, with pops of color this week.

Side note: I’m planning to make a mini album of all the photos from our trip, so I just included a couple of my favorite photos for the weekly spread.

Right-hand side:

Can we just pause for a bit and talk about how much I love this card above? The water color effect is my favorite. (The 4×6 card is from Amy Tan’s latest Plus One collection mini kit.)

AmeliaWrites_PL_week2RHS2

AmeliaWrites_PL_week2RHS4

Thoughts: I’m loving the clean and simple look of the weekly title cards. It provides some resting space for the eyes, while keeping everything consistent across the weeks. I especially love that it’s one less card for me to have to think about/fuss over.

Plus, enamel dots and wood veneers are definitely my go-tos. Enough said.

Project Life 2014 | week 1

27 March 2014

Twelve weeks into 2014, and I’m so glad that I’m finally getting around to sharing my Project Life spreads with you guys. Better late than never, right?

AmeliaWrites_PL_week1

Week of: 1 January to 5 January 2014

What happened this week: We celebrated the New Year, along with lots of other random activities, including lots of good food (one of our favorites!).

Left-hand side:

AmeliaWrites_PL_weekLHS

Techniques used: I created my own weekly title cards in Microsoft Powerpoint and printed it on white cardstock. Then I stamped the dates with my Amy Tangerine roller date stamp to finish it off. I also ran several of the journaling cards through the printer for my journaling.

AmeliaWrites_PL_week1LHS2

Those gold thickers are from American Crafts, and the “Celebrate” glitter card is from Mambi. Splashes of glitter for the New Year!

Right-hand side:

Rather ironically, I made a mistake on that journaling card with this quote by Neil Gaiman. The last line didn’t get printed, and you can see how I filled in the last sentence with a black pen in my own writing. But ah, we live and learn.

AmeliaWrites_PL_week1RHS4

Thoughts: I’m enjoying the combination of handwriting and typed journaling. I’m currently behind by several weeks, but this process has been so much fun and I’m slowly getting caught up.

Stay tuned – more updates to come!

Wednesday Word | no. 022

19 March 2014

Look Up / Carlo Mussett

Spring break was such a nice breather, albeit a little too short.

But I’ve spent this past week dealing with some unexpected curve balls, remembering to have faith, and trusting that everything will work out.

Dealing with things completely out of my control can be so scary, but such a good reminder that He is so much bigger than I am. And as I look up, He shows me His reality in so many little ways.

So I’m pressing on through this week, because He’ll get me through.

I hope the rest of your week is amazing x.
