Creative Conversations no. 008 | chatting with Caylee Grey

16 July 2014
Awhile back, I found Caylee through the Paislee Press blog and then proceeded to stalk read all her archives. She’s that good. Caylee creates with raw emotion and boundless creativity and style, making it so enjoyable to read her posts and see her work. She does it all so effortlessly. She recently left her day job and is running her own business full-time, which is such an exciting journey that I couldn’t be happier for her. Welcome to the blog, Caylee!

cg-ameliawrites

Tell me about yourself. I live a pretty good life in South Africa with my husband and fur baby. I force them into photos and homemade adventures, and they oblige because they love me. Last week I quit my day job and I’m crazyexcited to build up my business and not have to wear pants every day.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I get goosebumps when I sneeze. According to T, this is strange.

What do you do to express your creativity? Write out ideas, Project Life our everyday, art journal my innermost feelings, write in Notepad and delete it straight afterwards, read, wear silly underwear.

cg-ameliawrites-03

How did you get started doing this? I’m a planner. I started planning for Project Life two years before I actually opened up the file in Photoshop and added pictures. Once I got into the regular groove of Project Life I realised that I don’t actually have to plan every detail before diving in. It was a revelation. Now I try to do before thinking about it. That’s why I’m loving art journaling. There are no rules. It simultaneously freaks me out, and intrigues me.

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? Everything. Planning, process, and the final result. Each satisfies a different part of me.

cg-ameliawrites-09

Who or what inspires you? To do lists. Lists. Mind maps. Non-fiction books. Instagram. Not Pinterest. My husband.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I have an Ideas Moleskine, and Evernote. My Evernote is broken up into categories (blog, shop, life, creative, etc) and I get absolutely everything out of my head and into there. Sometimes writing down ideas lead to more ideas and that’s when my favourite types of projects are born. My Moleskine is less of a brain dump and more organised into plans. I’m working on shifting from ideas to completed projects, and so these lists include action points too.

cg-ameliawrites-12

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I do it because I get this itchy feeling if I don’t. I’m totally motivated by this itch and by the end result. I love seeing my art journals filled to the brim, and my Project Life files lined up on the shelf fills my heart with glee.

Describe your creative style. What I have learned is that I can’t force my style. I’d like to be minimalist but then I smear a bunch of glitter on the page. My style doesn’t fit in a box and I’m fine with that because everything I make still fits into the Caylee box.

cg-ameliawrites-13

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. Uni Pin Fine Line
  2. Scissors
  3. Double-sided-tape (stupid glue)
  4. Photoshop
  5. Moleskines

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I’m a night owl and I’m so happy that working for myself allows me to stay up until as late as I can manage. I am my most creative at night, but I’m most productive in the first hour after waking up. It’s a good mix.

cg-ameliawrites-04

What project(s) are you currently working on? Project Life, my art journal, my Radical Self Love Bible, my Etsy store (fave project !), and bettering myself through self-learning.

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Black since they wouldn’t get enough glitter in the gold.

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? The power to Get Things Done. And I’m truly working on this one.

cg-ameliawrites-06

What is your favorite quote? Pretty much anything that Chuck Palahniuk says, but this is one of the favourites: “Your handwriting. The way you walk. Which china pattern you choose. It’s all giving you away. Everything you do shows your hand. Everything is a self-portrait. Everything is a diary.”

I couldn’t fit all of Caylee’s creativity into one blog post, so be sure to follow her on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and her blog to keep up with this inspiring lady!

Thank you for joining us today, Caylee!

Hit pause.

9 July 2014

When life gets busy, I’m reminded that it’s okay to pause, take a break, and step away from the busyness sometimes.

And that’s how it’s been for me these past couple of weeks – trying to make the everyday moments count because I only get one shot. As I stay busy creating adventure and living life, those are the moments that add up.

I’ll be back with regular posting soon. Thank you for sticking with me.

You guys are the best.

Creative Conversations no. 007 // chatting with Meg Tsang

2 July 2014

When Meg first approached me about being a part of this series, I had seen her around on Instagram but I didn’t really know her. But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Meg better both creatively and personally through this post. Meg has an interesting story coming into the creative industry; she also has an incredible eye for photography. And I love the different perspective of creativity that Meg brings to this series. Read on and get to know her better like I did. Welcome to the blog, Meg!

Creativeconversations-MegTsang

Tell me about yourself. I’m Meg.  I’m an architect-turned-photographer based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City.  I photograph couples in love and growing families, all while traveling the world.  I’ve been to over 100 destinations since starting my photography business in 2008.  I love coffee shops, mornings and a good book.  I love life, and I love love.

AmeliaWrites_MegTsang8

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I once charmed a cobra.

What do you do to express your creativity? I express my creativity through my images and blog.  I love capturing emotion in my images.  When I can make my clients cry when they see their photographs, my job is done.

Jessica & Ryan | Fort Point Engagement Photography

How did you get started doing this? I went to school for architecture and loved it.  After graduation I worked at a firm design retail stores (and still get a kick out of visiting some of the stores we built).  When the recession hit, I was laid off.  I enjoyed unemployment for a bit, but soon got a bit antsy.  I started stationery, jewelry and knitting companies before settling into photography.  I was always interested in photography; I was that girl who always had a camera in her purse.  So I started editing for an established photographer and shooting weddings and portraits while I searched for an architecture job.  It was a very natural progression.  Over time the construction industry wasn’t improving, but my business was growing.  Six years later my business is thriving and I couldn’t be happier.

AmeliaWrites_MegTsang6

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I love that I get to be a part of people’s lives.  I love that I can help them save their memories.  It’s really such a blessing to be a part of such happy moments.

Who or what inspires you? Life and travel inspire me.  Sometimes when I feel uninspired, I take a moment to soak in my surroundings and search with in myself.  That moment of peace usually gets me going.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? Creating a close community of creatives has really helped me get through those uninspired bouts.  I also make a concerted effort to constantly learn.  I take classes and read books in topics that interest me, which helps feed my inspiration.

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I do what I do because it is who I am.  I am a creative, to not be creative would be to deny myself my natural inclinations.

San Francisco Portrait Photography | Ruby & Ben

Describe your creative style. I am fluid and emotional.

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. My wacom tablet.  Every designer/creative/photographer should have a tablet of some sort
  2. My collection of small black sketchbooks.  I carry one wherever I go.  I use it write out ideas, inspiration quotes, to do lists…etc.
  3. My iMac.  Having a great desktop computer has really made me more productive.
  4. Fuji x100s.  It’s the best camera for every day life.  I love it.
  5. My ONA Bowery bag.  It’s the perfect bag for traveling or going out in the city.  It’s a beautiful camera bag that fits all my essentials perfectly.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I am a night owl, but I am most productive from sunrise to noon.  It’s hard for me to get up, but I get more done in the mornings than if I stayed up all night.

Modern Rustic Wedding

What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m working on a bunch of weddings and portraits, but I have some styled wedding and editorial shoots in the works.

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Blue-green

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Teleportation, so I could travel wherever I wanted whenever I wanted.

Agra, India

What is your favorite quote? “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Be sure to follow Meg on her website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and blog to keep up with her creative happenings.

Let’s look at June…

30 June 2014

Each month just seems to fly by. Somehow, this month especially flew by for me. It may be a combination of work + play that helped the month go by so quickly. Either way, it’s hard to believe that next month is already July and halfway through 2014!

June was a little quieter than usual here on the blog. But here’s what went down this month:

This month, we chatted with my creative friends, Andrea and Cindy.

Salted Caramel Apple Upside Down Cake by A Pinch of Yum

Last week, I made this cake for a dinner that my friends and I had. And I dare say it turned out quite well!

I’ve never done upside down cakes before so I wasn’t sure how this would turn out. But that caramel sauce, coupled with vanilla ice-cream was pretty delicious!

2014-06-24 11.20.55 1

The original recipe says to bake for 45 minutes, but I prefer the cake to be a little more moist. So I will probably cut down the baking time to 35 minutes next time. The cake came out of the pan perfectly at 10 minutes though.

This is definitely one of those recipes that I was a little apprehensive about in the beginning, but worked out deliciously in the end.

16 down, 6 to go.

Project Life 2014 | my plan for catching up

19 June 2014

catchingupPL

As of this week, I’m currently behind on more than fifteen weeks of Project Life. FIFTEEN WEEKS, you guys!! That is no joke. That’s almost four months’ worth of photos and 105 days of memories.

Okay, so maybe I’m making this sound a lot worse than it really is. But I’ll be honest and tell you that I started stressing out a little a lot when I found out that I had ten weeks’ worth of spreads to catch up on. Then I decided to hit pause, breathe, and come up with a plan of action to get all caught up.

With how busy school is, and actually living life, Project Life isn’t always my priority. But since I failed once, I’m determined to try harder and smarter this time.

When I lay out my options, I could either skip the weeks, work backwards, or pick up where I left off. So while I don’t have any Project Life spreads to share with you today, I do have a plan of how I’m hoping to get all caught up with Project Life (if there’s even such a thing as being “caught up”!).

But here’s the plan I’ve come up with:

Work in batches. I don’t remember where I first heard about batch processing – but I like the sound of it, and I think it will really work with how much I have to tackle. This means selecting all the pictures at once, editing at once, printing at once, etc.

Set aside 10 to 15 minutes every day. Ideally, I’d like to find an afternoon (or a few days) to get it all done. But with my schedule, I reckon that’s hard to come by. So I’m breaking it all down into manageable portions that I can do a little at a time. And I think maybe spending just 15 minutes working on it every day will help.

Do what you can. Right now, I’ve decided to pick up where I’ve left off (which is week 9). I might change my mind later and decide to work backwards. We’ll see. But for now, I’m working with what I have and making the most of it. Even if some weeks end up just being photos + words (sans embellishments), I’ll still make do with it.

Don’t stress. The process needs to be enjoyable. If it isn’t fun, I’m less inclined to work on it.

Within the time I set aside each day, I can choose to accomplish any one of these things:

  • Journaling. Since Project Life is all about the every day and each day passes so quickly, I regularly try to write down all the things that need to go into my Project Life album into a planner as the days happen. Sometimes, I attach a sticky note to the spread if there are any “extras” I want to include so I don’t forget once I get round to working on the spread. This makes it easy for me to go back and check dates or events if (when) I forget.
  • Choosing + editing photos. This is probably one of the most dreaded parts for me (am I allowed to say that?). My only solution for this is to upload my photos each week and choose the photos I want to use in my spreads straightaway. I usually edit my photos on my phone with VSCO, which also allows me to edit on the go.
  • Printing photos. This is probably the easiest part because I hardly have to do any work. Once the photos are edited, I’ll drop them off at my local printer who gets them done in one hour, with reasonable quality.
  • Completing the spreads. This part could possibly end up being the most time-consuming. But also the most fun. It’s probably definitely my favorite part of the whole process – actually being creative and documenting the memories.

In between doing extra classes this summer and living life, I’ll really need to make time for this Project Life business. But I’m counting on you guys to keep me accountable and get this all done. Deal?

What tips do you have for catching up on Project Life?

Creative Conversations no. 006 | chatting with Cindy Backstrom

18 June 2014

I didn’t know much about Cindy when I first started following her on Instagram. But it’s always exciting discovering similarities that you have with friends you make on Instagram. I’ve since learned that Cindy and I share the same faith and profession! (I’m also majoring in education.) I always enjoy being inspired by Cindy’s creative pursuits and I hope you will be too. Welcome to the blog, Cindy!

Creativeconversations-Cindybackstrom

Tell me about yourself.  My name is Cindy (cinback on social media). I have two beautiful daughters (18 & 19 yrs old) and my husband and I recently celebrated 20 years of marriage. I am an educator, having taught in the classroom for 15 years and now providing professional development to the staff at my school (and taking the first steps to sharing our learning model around the world). I love the outdoors and being only an hour away from the mountains, we zip out there as often as possible to hike and bike and breathe fresh air. I love all kinds of crafting, as I love the challenge of learning something new, but scrapbooking is my ultimate pleasure. A few years ago, I started my blog Serious Play to share my creations with others.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you?  I have been skydiving and scuba diving and hot air balloon riding.

What do you do to express your creativity?  I am a crafter at heart. Creativity is my outlet after sitting in front of a computer for most of my day at work. I scrapbook, make cards, make mini albums, paint, knit, make paper garlands and have recently taken up modern calligraphy. I used to do a lot of scrapbook layouts, but now I have embraced Project Life as my main source of documenting life. To appease my love of embellishments, I make mini albums featuring a specific event or time. I also love photography and continually to try to grow that skill too.

Modern-Calligraphy

How did you get started?  I started scrapbooking after the birth of my first daughter, way back in 1994. I was invited to a Creative Memories party where I was first introduced to the concept of personalizing a photo album. Purchasing an album, some pens, stickers and a tape roller, I set off to document my new baby’s first year of life. However, there was not the wide range of beautiful products available today. In fact, this may have been the only scrapbooking company around at the time. Loving the concept of this type of documenting life, but not loving the choice of products out there, I lost interest. The next few years of my life I juggled two babies, plunging into my career, buying a house and car and life was just too busy for much crafting. Then scrapbooking magazines started popping up and I discovered Ali Edwards and Cathy Zielske. I bought all the magazines and spent hours examining the different styles and techniques and I followed so many blogs but my life was still too full for me to jump in, so I just admired from afar. As my girls grew older and needed me less, and my job required less hours of evening work, I began to dabble in scrapbooking again. And now, I spend almost every evening in my craft room after work making something!

What do you love most about what you do to be creative?  I love being challenged. So, if I see something that I like, I always try to find a way to re-create it for myself, especially if that means learning and developing a new skill. I don’t think I have ever said to myself, “You can’t do that!” In fact, I tell my girls all the time, “You can do anything. You just have to decide to!”

Who or what inspires you?  Everything! Being a very visual person I am attracted to magazines, Pinterest, and blogs. But I also draw inspiration from the patterns in nature.

Neutrals

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired?  I can’t honestly remember a time when I was stuck or uninspired. My issue is more that I have too many ideas than I have time to execute! I always keep a notebook handy and jot down things that I see that I want to try. And then I always have a few ideas of variations or improvements or substitutions that I could make to expand on that idea. Then, when I am working on something, I consult my notebook and all of those ideas come flooding back and I’m ready to go! I also keep a monthly Inspiration Board above my workspace, which is a catalogue of images and words that inspire me.

Inspiration-Board

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative?  I believe in Christ as the Creator and I believe that He has made me (and all of us) in his image, which means that we are innately creative. The question is whether or not we choose to exercise that creativity. I love the quote that says, “You cannot use up creativity. The more use, the more you have.” I believe that of Christ as well. The more I have of Him in my life, the more I am like Him and therefore, the more I am able to be creative.

Mini-Album

Describe your creative style.  This is tricky to answer, since I would say my ‘style’ is always changing. I don’t tend to follow the current trends and I don’t buy a ton of product. Instead, I try to make my own DIY version of something that I have seen and liked. I really just create things that I think are pretty.

I tend to stick to neutrals. I like colour, but in very small doses. Perhaps it comes from my love of nature and the calm that I feel from browns and greys and creams. I also try to avoid clutter. I like a lot of white space and breathing room and tend to cluster my embellishments while using them sparingly.

Gold-Embossed-Woodgrain

Name your top five favorite tools or products:

  1. Silhouette cameo
  2. Vintage typewriter
  3. Vellum
  4. Gold sequins
  5. Anything woodgrain

Vintage-Typewriter

Are you an early bird or night owl? When are you most productive?  I am definitely a night owl. Waking up in the morning is the hardest thing I have to do in my day. Perhaps if I didn’t have to leave for work at the crack of dawn every day I would enjoy mornings more. For me, it is the evenings that I look forward to. As my workday is ending, I am already anticipating the projects waiting for me at home. Often, I don’t get into my craft room until after supper but then time just disappears and I get lost in my own little world of productivity. I literally could stay up all night crafting, but I have to tear myself away at a reasonable hour because I know that it will be hard to wake up again the next morning!

What projects are you currently working on?

  • Project Life
  • Modern Calligraphy, through which I have gained some new penpals
  • Maggie Holmes Mini Book workshop at Studio Calico

Project-Life

If you had to be a colour in a crayon box, which colour would you be?  Probably, I would be a deep indigo colour, since it can fall into the neutral category, but can also be called on to be the star of the show. It has an element of uniqueness and mystery (not black, but not blue) as well as a quiet elegance (which I strive for, but have not yet reached).

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose?  Ha! I have never even thought about this before and actually had to look up a list of possible super powers. After reading them over, I guess I would choose telepathy, like in the movie What Women Want when Mel Gibson is able to hear women’s voices and gets a lot of insight! There are far too many people who suffer from negative self-talk. They think they are not worthy, not smart, not pretty, not capable, not creative…and I want to get in their heads and kibosh all those thoughts, replacing them with positivity, encouragement and love.

What is your favourite quote? I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Thank you, Dad.

15 June 2014

Fathersday2014

So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

Matthew 7:11, NLT

So often, fathers shoulder a burden that children won’t understand for a long time. But Dads do it anyway, and with so much love. What a tremendous picture of our Father in heaven – all He does, and so much more.

Especially since it’s Father’s Day, it needs to be said that my dad has been faithfully reading my blog since Day One. He supports me in what I do and believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself. Dad, thank you for your presence in my life and for always working to give me the best. Thank you for teaching me about life, for leading our family, for being willing to make the hard decisions. Thank you for pushing me to chase my dreams.

Thank you, Dad. I couldn’t ask for more. Love you!

And happy blessed Father’s Day to Dads all around.
