12 September 2014

Ameliawrites-fridayfavorites-12Sept

First off, huge thanks for all your lovely birthday wishes last week. I truly have the sweetest friends on the internet and Instagram – you guys are the best.

I didn’t spend much time online this week as school kept me super busy. But I’m hoping that all the hard work over the last few days will let me relax a little more (possibly with my craft supplies!) this weekend. We’ll see.

In the meantime, enjoy these links. I hope your Friday is the best.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 001

11 September 2014

After so many weeks of watching and admiring all the amazing art journal pages of these incredibly creative ladies from afar, I finally emailed Lauren and Caylee about taking the plunge.

Here’s a secret: I’ve never art journaled before, which made this a little scary, yet rather exciting at the same time.

But I thoroughly enjoyed this challenge. I think Thursdays just might be my favorite day of the week now with all this creating.

Let God:

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

I was inspired by the handwritten lettering that I saw on Pinterest and wanted to replicate it in my art journal pages. I wrote out the letters with a pencil and cut them out, splattered some mist, added washi tape and twine, and boom – done.

Embrace Change:

To me, butterflies symbolize change as they morph from caterpillar to butterfly. So I pulled out some Mister Huey’s and butterfly masks to capture the reminder I had for myself to embrace all the unexpected situations of life. I also happen to love how the colored mists combined into such a pretty shade – totally unplanned.

I’m excited for next Thursday already!

Creative Conversations no. 012 | chatting with Maria Lacuesta

10 September 2014
To me, Maria is the Queen of Creative Simplicity. She has the ability to make things look simply beautiful, which always inspires me. I love her style and seeing what she creates. Just take a look and see what I mean. Welcome to the blog, Maria!

 Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta

Tell me about yourself.  I am a blogger, designer, and memory keeper living in the Boston area with my boyfriend, Ray. When I’m not in front of my computer or happily working away in my tiny studio, you can find me enjoying the neighborhood I love and dreaming of my next project.

I believe in cultivating a happy life and, for me, that means creating something every day and giving thanks for all the little things that make life so wonderful.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? Sometimes I forget how old I am.

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-04-640

What do you do to express your creativity? So many things. I love graphic design, paper crafts, photography, memory keeping, and blogging.

How did you get started doing this? I’ve always been drawn to the arts. My paper obsession started while I was a child and as a teen, I was always in the darkroom.

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-07-640

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? A couple of years ago, I started my first Project Life album and I’ve been hooked ever since because I get to combine so many things I love in one project. I’ve also really come to appreciate the act of documenting the everyday. It’s become such a wonderful gratitude exercise and I think it helps ground me.

I feel the same way about Instagram. There was a period of time when I stopped shooting photos and about 5 months ago, I challenged myself to post at least one photo a day on Instagram for the #100happydays challenge. This daily ritual become a habit and now I continually find new things to be grateful for, often posting 3 times a day now.

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-10-640

Who or what inspires you? I am constantly amazed by other artists, crafters, and makers. Instagram is always inspiring and I find new people to follow everyday. I also love Pinterest for organizing my images. When I’m feeling low on inspiration, I’ll often scroll through the different boards I’ve created in order to give my creativity a jump start.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? Stepping away from one project to work on something else always helps when I’m feeling stuck. Cleaning and exercise are also really helpful, although I avoid going those routes whenever possible 🙂

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-09-640

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I just become so unhappy when I’m not being creative. I think making things is good for the soul.

Describe your creative style. A crafty blend of pretty paper and pixels.

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-03-640

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. Photoshop, the love of my life.
  2. Also, my camera,
  3. printer,
  4. Cameo,
  5. and glue stick.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I am most productive on my computer at night and I tend to be more crafty during the day. I used to be quite the night owl, but I’ve come to love mornings. Breakfast is the one meal Ray and I always eat together and I cherish this small, everyday ritual.

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-11-640

What project(s) are you currently working on? If you’ve visited my site, you may have noticed the Shop section! It will be launching in September and will feature digital designs for download and personalized paper goods made to order. Here’s a little sneak peek…I’m beyond excited!

Ameliawrites-MariaLacuesta-06-640

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? White

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? To get things done! Definitely a case of more ideas than time over here.

What is your favorite quote? “Not all those who wander are lost.”

There’s more creativity and inspiration on Pinterest, Instagram, Studio Calico and her website. Be sure to follow Maria to keep being inspired!

the 22 list | recap

4 September 2014

22list

Earlier in June, with just a little over three months left to complete the 22 list, I realized that I had to face reality and accept the fact that I wasn’t going to get everything on the 22 list done before my next birthday. (This sounds vaguely familiar. Maybe this happened last year too? Are my overachiever tendencies showing through here?)

Anyhow, my overachieving self had a little trouble reconciling that fact. But then I decided that instead of focusing on all I wouldn’t accomplish, I would focus on working as hard as I could with the time left to do what I could.

So with my birthday just around the corner, here’s what I have to show for the 22 list. I will readily admit it isn’t much, but I like to think that at least something is better than nothing.

Since a lot of these items are in-progress, technically I can’t cross them off the list, although I did work on them during the past year.

  1. Try 22 new recipes. I can proudly say that I completed this one and it’s still one of my favorite things to do on the list.
  2. Read at least one book a month. I successfully finished reading six books, which is about one book in two months. Since I don’t typically have much time to read, I’d say that’s pretty good.
  3. Run a half-marathon. So much fun with this one.
  4. Write a business plan/start a business.
  5. Document life. This is still a work-in-progress but I love everything that has been documented so far.
  6. Make a recipe folder.
  7. Make at least six creative projects. I have my six projects planned out. I just haven’t started on them yet (oops).
  8. Bind a book.
  9. Establish a routine. This one has been so hard. But it’s something I’m constantly, regularly working on each new day.
  10. Learn to take better pictures. This one is always, always a work-in-progress. But I took the Phone Photography Project 2 with Big Picture Classes this summer and I’m starting to apply some of the things I picked up.
  11. Learn how to use Photoshop/Photoshop Elements OR HTML/CSS (or both). I started with the basics of HTML; I need to finish this though.
  12. Take an online/craft class. I signed up for several online classes this year and I’m taking my time to work through them because there’s so much good stuff! (But I’ll share more about this in a future blog post.)
  13. Make a project using cork.
  14. Sew something.
  15. Make jewelry.
  16. Stay on the Dean’s list. YES. So grateful for this.
  17. Paint something. Does the cork project count?
  18. Make something with canvas.
  19. Make a DIY with bobby pins.
  20. Use a sharpie for a DIY. My supplies are ready to go – I just need to plan this out and do it!
  21. Write/send five pieces of snail mail. The last piece of mail is going out next week!
  22. Carve a stamp.

Like I said, I didn’t complete as many things as I would’ve liked because the days were so full with school and life (I’m not complaining though!).

But next year, I’m working on turning all my good intentions into action. Because as with each year, I’ll strive for progress, not perfection.

Here’s to 22. You were pretty good.

Oven Roasted Cauliflower by One Perfect Bite

By now, you probably know that quick, simple and delicious recipes are totally right up my alley.

And this was one of them. I almost feel silly for posting this because it’s so easy. But I made this as a quick lunch today (prepped in 15 minutes!) and it was so good. With such a hearty and healthy dish, my mom and I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch.

I think I’m making it again tomorrow. Yum.

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins with Cinnamon Streusel by Sally’s Baking Addiction

I cannot adequately describe how delicious these muffins are. With a mouth-watering combination of bananas, chocolate chips, walnuts and cinnamon, these muffins are pretty self-explanatory.

Granted, I was a tad nervous about how these would turn out since I hadn’t made them before. But I made these mini-muffins for my Bible Study group one evening and they were such a hit. Phew. It made my baker’s heart happy knowing that everyone enjoyed it.

These muffins also made a delicious breakfast the next morning and afternoon snack. Actually, they’re delicious any time of the day, really.

Inspiration blog hop

2 September 2014

Last week, I was more than happy to agree when Catherine from Green Fingerprint emailed me to ask about participating in this blog hop. I couldn’t think of a better way to start September, so here we go!

Ameliawrites-Inspirationbloghop

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON? Currently, my biggest project is documenting life through Project Life and working on getting all caught up. I also have plans for several travel mini albums and themed albums that are all works-in-progress. Plus, I’m hoping to give the blog a makeover soon!

Ameliawrites-Inspirationbloghop

HOW DOES YOUR WORK DIFFER FROM OTHERS? For me, photos are a big focus of what I do. I love incorporating color and mixing various products to come up with fresh combinations.

Ameliawrites-Inspirationbloghop

WHY DO YOU CREATE WHAT YOU DO? I create to reflect my Creator. I create to remember the memories. I create because I can. I create because expressing creativity is part of what I do and love. And sometimes, I create just because I need an excuse to buy and use pretty paper.

Ameliawrites-Inspirationbloghop

HOW DOES YOUR CREATING PROCESS WORK? My creating process differs depending on what I’m creating. If I’m working on Project Life, I typically follow the process of planning, editing and printing photos, and completing the spreads (I’ll share more details in a future post). If I’m working on a layout or handmade cards, I let myself be inspired by the products I’m working with, or whatever is around me, and just roll with it. Like I said, it varies and really depends on my creative project at hand.

—

This week, I nominate Lauren, Vanessa, and Pam to participate in the blog hop. These ladies are incredibly creative. They constantly inspire me with their style and work and I am so privileged to call each of them friends! Be sure to check out their blogs next week to read more about their inspiration and creativity.

I also nominate YOU, my wonderful readers who want to jump in on this. Leave a link in the comments if you do so I can check out your post!

  • Grateful for this post.
  • Especially love Marcy’s spreads for Studio Calico this month.
  • Needing to try these ways to cure wanderlust.
  • On starting a project.
  • Possibly the best invention ever?
  • Remembering this for my next brainstorm session.

Last week was so, so tough. But this week turned out to be much better. I guess sometimes you need to hit the bottom before going up, right? I’m still adjusting to having a full term of classes and learning the act of balancing work + play. But at least I have plans this weekend, so here’s to a stress-free weekend!

I hope you have a good one, xx.

22 recipes | angel hair with zucchini and tomatoes

Angel Hair with Zucchini and Tomatoes by Skinny Taste

I can’t believe this is the third last recipe for the 22 list. Time certainly flies with less than a week to go until I write yet another list for a new year.

Anyhow, before I get all sappy on you, this is one pasta we enjoyed for dinner during one of the evenings. It’s a vegetarian dish, but still so delicious (and quite healthy) you wouldn’t miss not having any meat.

I also love how the crushed red pepper flakes added an extra punch to the whole dish. Pretty yummy, overall!
