31 October 2014

Ameliawrites-Fridayfavorites-31Oct14

  • Excited for this new weekly feature.
  • Yes for film.
  • Can’t wait to watch this.
  • Love this print.
  • Remember to empathize.
  • Work smarter, not harder.

This week started out a little rough for me. But everything worked out, and I’m quite looking forward to my plans this weekend.

On a random note, I reckon that I take too many sunset photos. But I also reckon that none of these sunsets ever look the same, ever. Because who can resist sunset photos when they leave you in such awe?

Have a rad weekend, guys xx.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 008

Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

I was one week too early for October’s prompt last week, but I decided to challenge myself and use the same prompt again this week. So you get double the inspiration for this month’s prompt 😉

One thing I love about Get Messy is how I get to channel my inner minimalist, as evident in this week’s pages.

Oui, chef!

Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

This page is for the art journal challenge: we constantly have an abundance of food, which is a huge part of our lives, so that is definitely something I’m thankful for. Plus, I also really wanted to use the adorable stamps from Kelly Purkey’s Bon Appetit set.

In everything give thanks.

Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

There is always so much to be thankful for, and I wanted to document this reminder to be thankful in all things.

While I am not a fan of my handwriting, I decided to use it for this week’s page. So I sketched out the lettering on a piece of scrap paper and used a Sharpie to write it out. It isn’t perfect, but I’m glad that I managed to include my handwriting somewhere.

Let’s look at October

29 October 2014

How is it that we’re already at the end of October and less than two months until Christmas? Red Christmas cups are already out at Starbucks, which just signals how quickly this year is coming to an end. Wowza.

Despite how quickly time is flying by, here’s a look at what happened on the blog this month:

My love for Get Messy continues to run deep and this month was no exception.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 007

23 October 2014

Ameliawrites-GetMessy

I just totally confused myself.

I originally started this post talking about how I actually started working on another art journal page before remembering Olya’s art journal prompt for October and how I had decided to take on both the art challenge and journaling challenge this month.

Then I just realized that there are five Thursdays in October and that the monthly link-up isn’t until next week.

I told you I was confused right.

Rambling aside, here are my pages based on the October prompts anyway.

Thankful.

Ameliawrites-GetMessy

This page is based on the art challenge for the month.

Since I have zero artistic ability in any sort of drawing or doodling, I decided to use Amy Tangerine’s die cuts to illustrate the things I’m thankful for: food in the form of ice cream, nature, or being outdoors, and love.

Counting blessings.

Ameliawrites-GetMessy

I used some clear stamps from Heidi Swapp for the journaling challenge. I stamped in Brilliance silver ink and used a regular black pen to write the things I’m thankful for. Nice and simple.

I really enjoyed the challenge this month and had fun interpreting the prompts.

And oh, I’ll try to be less confused next week/month, ha.

Creative Conversations no. 015 | chatting with Rachel Lim

22 October 2014
I’m so excited to be chatting with Rachel of Scrappin’ Love in today’s conversation. Her Instagram photos are full of creativity and her work constantly inspires me with its vibrant colors and beautiful layers. Rachel lives right on the same island as I do and I loved getting to know her better in this post!

AmeliaWrites-RachelLim

Tell me about yourself. Hello there! I’m Rachel, born and raised in sunny island Singapore. I’m a mother of 2 young boys and married to my best friend cum soul mate for 11 years now. In the day, I manage the household while being the caregiver to my boys and coaching them on their studies. By night fall, I take the seat of a crafter who scrapbook, blog, sew, crochet and craft the night away.

If you can’t find me at my desk, most probably I’m catching a show with my man on our couch.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I don’t like chocolate or any food in chocolate favor. I know, that’s weird.

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Planner & Traveler Notebook

What do you do to express your creativity? Be it in any form of crafts, even if it is a little drawing session with my kids. At times I love to play with papers and create a mini album out of them. And on some days I prefer to mingle with random stuffs such as washi tapes. I do have quite a handful of hobbies to keep my creativity flowing.

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Traveler Notebook

How did you get started doing this? When I was old enough to hold a pencil in my hand, I started doodling. I attended art classes since I was a kid, won in many drawing and design competitions, exceled in my Art subject during my school days, quit my job as a science technologist in a national defence research & development company to pursue my dream in becoming an interior designer and used my savings that put me through my first year of study before earning myself a scholarship. It was a fruitful 3 years, I have learnt lots including fine arts, photography, pottery, painting and design studies.

My life took a turning point a year after we had our first child – I decided to be a stay-at-home-mom and I was hooked to scrapbooking. I was never away from art & design since I picked up my first drawing pencil and I’m so glad I took the chance to pursue my dream.

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? It’s the ability to create from nothing into something.

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Washi Love

Who or what inspires you? Fellow crafters, even those of a different area of specialist. Photographs, colors, nature.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I turn to Instagram and Pinterest for inspirations. When I’m stuck or low in mojo, I’ll pack the project away and stay clear of my craft desk for awhile. Surf the internet, catch some drama series, family time with my boys, be a pig and sleep a lot or whatever activity that can take my mind off where I hit the wall. Usually and most of the time, I’ll be back and fully packed with ideas to finish up what I have left undone.

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Mini Album

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? It is because it keeps me sane and happy. And these alone keep me going even though it means to sacrifice beauty sleep.

Describe your creative style. I don’t intend to label my style with any particular words. But hey, I’m a totally neat freak so clean and neat is my way of creating. 😉

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Hand-stitch Journal

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. iPhone – I use my good old but awesome iPhone camera 99% of the time I took my photos.
  2. Scissors – my cutter bee and honey bee by EK Success.
  3. Canon Selphy Printer
  4. Adhesive – tape glue and liquid glue.
  5. Papers – Of course, I go nuts over pretty pattern papers particularly by Crate Paper, My Mind’s Eye, Webster’s Pages and many others.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? Hoot hoot… a night owl yes I am. Please don’t try to have any discussion with me during the middle of the day when my energy level is at its lowest. :p

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-On My Craft Desk

What project(s) are you currently working on? Project Life albums – I’m clearing the weeks and closing up the gaps. Plus another fun project that I can only reveal when it is ready.

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Blue.

Ameliawrites-Rachel Lim-Project Life

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? I want to have endless energy so that I can have the ability not having the need to go to bed! Ha ha!

What is your favorite quote? “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 006

16 October 2014

Ameliawrites-getmessy

It’s Get Messy Thursday again and I’m back sharing more pages from this week.

I had grand plans of completing these pages before leaving for my trip. Alas, those plans came to naught and I’ll admit that I only completed these pages this morning. But I’m glad these pages came together quickly and I like how they look together.

BKK

Ameliawrites-getmessy

Inspired by our travels this past week, I punched 1 1/2 inch circles from Studio Calico’s Wanderlust patterned paper, added a tag, some stamping, and a chipboard geotag and called it done. I’ve always loved the look of grids on scrapbook layouts and am glad that I finally got to try them out on this page.

Celebrate life

Ameliawrites-getmessy

I revived my love for MAMBI’s jumbo stickers on this page. I “watercolored” the background with Mister Huey’s Buttercup mist and stuck the sticker on top.

These week’s pages are still pretty simple, but unlike the muted pages of last week, this week has splashes of color, which I love.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 005

9 October 2014

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

Get Messy Thursdays are such a nice part of my week.

Be vulnerable.

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

I kept things simple again this week.

I made this page as a reminder to myself to be open and vulnerable, even if it means getting hurt. Although walls may be easy to build, they become difficult to tear down. So this is my note to self not to build those walls in the first place.

On a random side note, I’m learning that I really like using vellum and that patterned paper from Crate Paper’s Notes & Things collection.

Remember this.

Ameliawrites-Getmessy

I saved this sprig of baby’s breath for a couple of weeks and finally decided to use it this week. I kept the page light and airy with some splatters of mist, washi tape, and a Heidi Swapp “Remember this” stamp.

I quite liked the right-hand page this week, but I’m definitely seeing myself getting into a pattern with the supplies that I use on my art journal pages. I’ll need some inspiration to switch things up soon!

Creative Conversations no. 014 | chatting with Rachel Del Grosso

8 October 2014
I first discovered Rachel through the Becky Higgins Project Life 2014 Creative Team. Since then, I’ve enjoyed being inspired by Rachel’s style and reading her blog. Her willingness to be real and open online is one of my favorite things about her. Welcome to the blog, Rachel!

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso

Tell me about yourself. I’m Rachel, the lady behind the blog, Big City Quiet. I’m from Ontario, Canada but was transplanted to Las Vegas, NV in January 2011 where I now live with my husband and toddler son. I’m your basic head-in-the-clouds, heart-on-my-sleeve, passionate, creative 30 year old with dreams of working for myself and being location independent.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? I can make my bottom eyelashes move from side to side. I had a friend in College who was so creeped out by it that I used to do it almost every time she looked at me, especially when she was least expecting it. It was endless entertainment for everyone.

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-03

What do you do to express your creativity? Anything I can, really. I’ve always been a very visual person. When I was younger it was painting (watercolor and acrylics mostly) and then I went through a charcoal phase where I produced some of my favorite pieces I’ve ever made. I have always been a writer of poetry, short stories and novels, and I have kept a journal for over 22 years. Photography has always been and always will be a big passion of mine, and then at the end of November 2012 I began project life scrapbooking, and haven’t turned back!

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-05

How did you get started doing this? Sometime in 2011 I came across Ali Edwards’ blog and I was so blown away by her memory keeping system. I had always wanted to try scrapbooking but the large 12×12 traditional style scared me, so when Ali introduced me to project life I just knew that it would be a perfect fit. However, at the time, despite being newly married, I felt as though my life was too boring to document, so I waited. When I got pregnant with my son in 2012, I knew it was a perfect time to begin documenting.

Who or what inspires you? As a super visual person I find that I am most inspired by other people’s work. I could look at a painting and feel inspired to write a poem, or a photograph can inspired a new set of project life designs. These days my biggest inspiration comes from how people are living their lives: like Caylee Grey who inspires me to push forward with my business, Ali Edwards who inspires me to truly live a life worth documenting, and Meg Fee, who constantly reminds me of how beautiful the written word is and pushes me to improve my own writing.

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-04

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I have to laugh because I’m so terrible at staying consistently inspired when it comes to project life. I come and go in waves, it’s pretty bad! When I’m feeling stuck or uninspired the first thing I do (honestly) is complain to Caylee and Kelsey over a few texts, and then I bite the bullet and log on to pinterest. Whether I’m browsing a design board, or fashion boards, something always jumps out at me. If I’m having a particularly rough time with a spread, I try to step away and look at it again either a few hours later, or the next day. By then I usually have any idea of what I can change.

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? Long story short: because I need to. When life is getting me down, when I’m stressed out or having a bad day, or even I’m having the time of my life, creating always balances me. I feel a pull to write… every day, or photograph and document my life… every day. Life is what motivates me. I want to remember the big and little moments of this one life I’m given.

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-07

Describe your creative style. This is a tough question to answer. One thing I know is that I always try to focus on great photographs, and I make sure to add in a lot of journaling, but I don’t think that really answers the question. Sometimes I feel like other people have me pegged much better than I do. Let me ask you: how would YOU describe my creative style? 🙂

Name your top five favorite tools or products.

  1. My DSLR and iPhone, for sure. I will count those as one 🙂
  2. Lightroom
  3. My Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher (seriously, I’m basically addicted to a stapler!)
  4. Wood veneers
  5. Paislee Press products!

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-06

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? My husband and I have a good laugh about this often, because I am TERRIBLE at staying up late. And I mean, terrible. I’m definitely an early bird. If I can get up, make a coffee and get right to work with no distractions then the first 3-4 hours of my day are my most productive. However, my son is also an early bird, but unless he is at his grandparents, I never get to take advantage of those productive hours.

What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m always working on my project life albums, but I also have a 6×8 one little word album in progress as well. I will soon be starting a project MY life album – like the lovely Kellie Winnell – and of course I’ve been keeping busy designing project life sets for my Etsy shop!

Ameliawrites-RachelDelGrosso-02

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Gray, I think. It’s not as dark as black, but it’s quiet and usually understated, like me. When you want to spruce yourself up a bit you can add a nice pop of color and look fantastic.

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? I would definitely want to read minds. I drive myself crazy wondering what people are thinking (and sadly, what they think of me).

What is your favorite quote? “What’s for you won’t pass you by.”

Follow Rachel on her blog, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube and Etsy shop and tell her I sent you!
