Get Messy no. 013 | an art journal challenge

4 December 2014

Gold for Christmas in my Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

I’m getting into the Christmas spirit with this week’s pages – complete with gold stars, Christmas stamps and motifs.

Use a doily and gold stars for this Christmas look | Get Messy art journal by Amelia Writes

Although I’m not much of a doily person, I’ve been wanting to include one in my art journal pages, which I finally did.

And I love it. YAY.

Gold for Christmas in my Get Messy art journal | Amelia Writes

The tags are from IKEA, and the stamps are by Allison Kreft for Webster’s Pages.

Despite this week’s pages being rather impromptu for me, I actually really like how they turned out. The gold is a total win for me and these might be my favorite pages to date.

I’m so excited for Christmas, you guys!

P.S. Have you heard the latest Get Messy news?? Hop over to Lauren’s and Caylee’s blogs to find out. I’m so excited for how this Get Messy journey is evolving!

Creative Conversations no. 018 | chatting with Felicitas Mayer

3 December 2014

I found Felicitas on Instagram and there’s something about her bright colorful style which makes me happy. Her creativity is inspiring and thoroughly evident in all that she makes. She even started her own kit club this year, which just shows how talented she is. I’m so happy to welcome Felicitas to the blog today!

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer

Tell me about yourself. Hello there, my name is Felicitas, 34, a product designer for the crafting industry and I live with my husband in Southern Germany. I love paper, DIYs & anything pretty and I like to document my creative adventures in photos.  If you search for PAPIERPROJEKT in the web, you’ll find me because that’s what I’m up to: I create paper projects.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? Uuuhm, I think a weird fact is that I love love love lemons. I peel and eat them like oranges, drink pure lemon juice like any other fruit juice and I can get really angry if someone forgets to buy any… Was that weird enough or creepy already?

What do you do to express your creativity? Well two or three years back, I’d said I craft to express myself. But since I’m self-employed and create projects for a living (exaggerated spoken), sometimes it doesn’t feel like just expressing creativity but more like just work, if you know what I mean. So along with the creativity through crafting and the actual handiwork to create projects or DIYs, I somehow fell in love with photography. I think that’s the reason why I’m not just a little bit obsessed with Instagram: developing how to shoot the pretty stuff on your desk, composing nice photos… that’s fun for me and the expression of my creativity these days.

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer_papierprojekt_craftroom_kreativkit_2

How did you get started doing this? I started scrapbooking in the summer of 2009 and I blog about it since 2010. One and a half year later, I started my own business and taught German paper crafting online-course, followed by a took-over of a German scrapbooking magazine (yes, a real printed one) and at the end of 2012, I designed my very first crafting collections. As a graphic designer for many years, I always felt the urge to design products while I was creating my paper projects, mostly to fulfill my own needs but also to inspire people to get creative on their own. In 2013 my products (and the magazine) were sold across Europe and in some parts of Asia, Australia and USA.

Then I was forced to take a long break (almost a year) to refill low batteries, to create a more healty work-life balance and to think about what I love most of all the projects I was working on. That wasn’t easy for me and it took a long time to recover.

But if you have time to think about yourself and your life, you get pretty soon to the important stuff. I realized my whole heart is in product designing but I also realized I wasn’t just a (simple) scrapbooker anymore… So I thought about some products to be creative with no matter if you document your life in photos, love pretty packaging or you create some decoration for your home because that’s what I do to make myself happy.

That was the moment when my new label PAPIERPROJEKT was born and at the beginning of November, I was back in product designing and launched my very first creative kit, which is available on my Etsy shop.

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer_papierprojekt_craftroom_kreativkit_3

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I love to have time! Since I am my own boss I’m able to clean my schedule to getting totally lost in crafting or photoshooting and nobody cares if I’m off for two hours or six. And right now I am developing new products and materials for my next creative kit and that’s also pretty cool, I guess. Sitting here and choosing new paper qualities or checking if a new product prototype will work as I had imagine it…

Who or what inspires you? I know most people tend to say they get inspired via Pinterest or magazines. But as I mentioned before, I’m an Insta-girl. That’s where I hang out in my lunch break and get inspired by browsing through my feed and the recommendations. I’m always stunned by people’s creative ways to express themselves or share their lives on Instagram. And for myself, I found some great crafty friends who inspire me everyday. And it’s also good to feel connected to that circle of creative people I sadly won’t be able to meet in real life but still be allowed to catch glimpses of their lives.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I learned the hard way that you can’t force your creativity to be there if you need it. There was a time when I did too many scrapbook pages using products I didn’t really like, to promote companies I was working for. I joined scrapbooking design teams since 2010 (manufacturer teams since 2011) and in retrospection I know now, I work the best or stay inspired when I’m allowed to play with things I really love. I think it’s important not to pressure yourself in anything you don’t feel just because it’s cool or trendy today.

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer_papierprojekt_craftroom_kreativkit_4

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? Well, I love to create things by my own hands. I love to create things from scratch and watch them transform from a simple amount of products or materials into something new and handmade… something that you just saw in your mind before. The actual process of creating / making stuff is something very precious to me.

Describe your creative style. It’s colorful but at the same time bright & light, I think. I like to combine different patterns, colors and textures and when it comes to photography, I tend to shoot all my projects in bright light and with lots of white space.

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer_papierprojekt_craftroom_kreativkit_5

Name your top five favorite tools or products. Paper! Any kind of paper, it just has to be pretty. Followed by my scissors, my liquid glue, the black ink bottle and my canon selphy printer.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? Definitive an early bird! I do all the important stuff early in the mornings, work some hours in the afternoon, so I have time for my husband when he comes home in the evening.

What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m working on upcoming new products and I’m also planning to do a December Daily this year and I have to prepare one of the cute little Instagram albums for it.

Ameliawrites-FelicitasMayer_papierprojekt_craftroom_kreativkit_6
If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Black or white because they’re basics and match to any other color or gold because it’s shiny 😉

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? I’d choose flying or even better: teleportation like they did in Star Trek. That would be pretty cool to beam you up to every place you like within minutes!

What is your favorite quote? To be honest, it changes a lot and it also depends on the mood I’m in, but I always liked the one below!

There’s a not so small percentage of times, in which I’m scared of my own courage and of what I’m doing (due to my work related past). And yes, I doubt myself about my ‘career choices’ and if it’s really worth to do it because there is a great difference between people who tell you they like your stuff and people who are actually willing to spend money in something you sell…

In those times, I try to remember the quote and I convince myself, as long as I’m happy with it and there’s my family who supports me no matter what, I’m a lucky girl and it’s worth to give it a try at least. Because that’s what life is about, right?

Project Life 2014 | week 15

2 December 2014

Ameliawrites-PL-week15

As promised, I’m sharing more of the Project Life spreads that I managed to finish over the last weekend.

Oh, these weeks seem like such a long, long time ago. And rightly so, because they happened in April earlier this year and we’re already in December.

Anyhow, I skipped week 14 because I have almost no photos for that week and I’m still trying to figure out how I am going to fill up the 12×12 spreads.

Week of: 7 to 13 April

What happened this week: A new blog layout, dinners with friends, and some happy mail.

The yellow tag is a printable from Studio Calico, and the stamps are from Heidi Swapp and Kelly Purkey.

Definitely can’t get enough of those gold stickers from MAMBI!

Techniques: Nothing particularly new, besides using cards from Dear Lizzy’s Daydreamer kit, which tied everything together nicely. Plus, I loved including the printable from Olya in this week’s spread.

Thoughts: I especially loved the color scheme this week – colorful, bright, and happy. It was a good week.

Get Messy | an art journal challenge no. 012

27 November 2014

Blessed - Get Messy | an art journal challenge by Amelia Writes

Today I am blessed.

This week’s pages are based on Andrea’s prompts for November:

Journaling challenge: Pick one word that describes you right now. Just one word.

Art challenge: Play with the word you picked. Use letter stickers, cut out your word from magazines and create a collage, write your word a hundred times on a piece of paper and use it as a background, use paint to write your word… The main focus should be on your word.

Blessed - Get Messy | an art journal challenge by Amelia Writes

I was stuck on these prompts for awhile. Then I decided that the rubber stamp from my friend Kellie was the perfect way to convey my word.

And my word is blessed.

Which is perfect, considering the fact that today is Thanksgiving.

And even though it isn’t a national holiday here in Singapore, I love being reminded to stop and count my blessings, to pause and be grateful for all that I’ve been blessed with.

For friends and family. For freedom and faith. For grace and strength. For His new mercies every morning. For good health and strong bodies. For abundant provision. For protection. For wisdom in decisions and school work. For the ability to stay connected through technology, and disconnected when I need to be. For the support, love and friendship of this online community. For words to write for this blog. For lessons learned and experiences gained. For opportunities to grow and be stretched.

I am truly so, so blessed, and have so much to be thankful for. And that’s not even the whole list.

Blessed - Get Messy | an art journal challenge by Amelia Writes

I guess this turned out to be more than just an art journal post.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. May we never cease to be thankful for how much we have been given.

Project Life 2014 | week 13

Project Life week 13 | Amelia Writes

Finally, some Project Life spreads.

I had the photos and cards ready to go for awhile now since our catch-up on Project Life challenge earlier this year, but I finally had time to add the finishing pieces and journaling. I’m sharing week 13 today, and I’ll be sharing the rest of the completed spreads in the coming weeks.

Week of: 24 to 30 March, 2014

What happened this week: Nothing too exciting happened during the week, except a commendation email from my professor, which I included a screenshot of. But we had lots of food, fun and family over the weekend.

More gold MAMBI stickers on photos – yay!

Thoughts: Working on this spread (and the rest of them) made me so happy to have these memories from earlier this year documented. And although I still have so much to catch up on, I remind myself that at least it’s progress. Plus, remembering how much I love this project is huge motivation for me to keep going even when it feels overwhelming and daunting at times.

23 in Lists | November update

25 November 2014

Ameliawrites-23inlistsNov

In September, I first wrote about my plan to write a goals/to-do list of sorts for each month of twenty-three. It’s hard to believe that two months have already passed by: I’ve already written lists for October and November, and a new one is soon due for December.

So I thought it was time for an update and my thoughts on this little project so far.

In the spirit of keeping things real and honest on this blog, I will admit that the 23 in Lists project hasn’t been as “successful” as I would’ve liked for it to be. It hasn’t been successful according to my terms and expectations as I make and try to execute the list. But I’m learning not to stress out over the fact that things don’t go according to the way I plan.

Here’s what I love and what I’ve learned about 23 in Lists so far.

WHAT I LOVE

  • Accomplishing things.

I didn’t get to cross off everything on the list in September or October. But for those that I did, it definitely was satisfying being able to check it off my list.

  • Making progress.

Even for things I didn’t accomplish, I was able to at least make progress. What I love about this so far is that the monthly list is really pushing me to start doing things instead of just letting them be another thing on the list. My list may not be done, but I’m making progress and that’s what really matters.

  • No stress.

All the stress I feel is mostly self-imposed, so really, there is absolutely no reason to be stressed out. If I do things right, the monthly list actually takes the stress off for me to check things off and I can actually just let some things roll forward to the next month.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED

  • Let go of expectations.

Expectations have a way of getting you down and making you more discouraged than you should be. Instead of focusing on the things I haven’t done, I’m focusing on the progress I’m making on my list.

  • Be flexible.

I’m learning to adapt and not be afraid to adjust my lists as my schedule calls for it. When unexpected situations come up, adapting and making adjustments helps me to not get overly stressed out. Note to self: Don’t be afraid to adjust, adapt and move your goals.

  • Be realistic.

As an over-achiever, I’m learning to be realistic by limiting the number of goals I include each month. This way, I have a realistic expectation of what I am able to accomplish and keep myself from feeling discouraged by an overly-long list.

There’s still nine more months of lists and I can’t wait to see what else I will accomplish during this time. Let’s keep going.

  • Time to start counting down to Christmas with this cute garland.
  • Nothing better than hot cocoa on a rainy day.
  • For better productivity.
  • Buy less + live simply.
  • Appreciating learning two languages.

It’s been a busy week so I just have a handful of links to share this week. But I’m looking forward to the weekend.

Have a good one, guys! xx.
