Tidings of comfort and joy!

25 December 2014

Ameliawrites-Christmas2014

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:11-12, KJV

This is truly the most wonderful time of the year.

I love so many things about this season – the festivities, the gathering of friends and family, all the delicious food, the excitement and anticipation in the air as we approach the end of the year, the spirit of kindness and giving, the well-loved Christmas carols and tunes, the pretty decorations and lights lining the streets, the thoughtful gifts, the continued traditions…

But most of all, I love that Christmas is a reminder of the hope that I have because of the birth of my Savior – the hope of new life, of salvation, of grace all-sufficient, of deliverance.

As the familiar song goes,

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices!
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Truly, hope is present at Christmas because the newborn King has come to save the world.

Blessed Christmas to you and yours this season.

3 quick and easy ways to wrap festive Christmas gifts without Christmas paper

I finally finished my Christmas wrapping this weekend. Which is quite a record for me, since I’m not finishing it on Christmas Eve instead, ha.

I didn’t have many gifts to wrap this year, and I didn’t have any Christmas paper on hand. But I didn’t want to specially purchase Christmas wrapping paper just for a handful of presents.

So I came up with three quick and easy ways to get those presents looking festive without actually using Christmas paper.

Here’s how I did it:

Use white paper, paper rosette, and a snowflake for quick Christmas wrapping | 3 ways to wrap festive Christmas gifts without Christmas paper

1. Add a Christmas element.

For this gift, I added a kraft snowflake from Maya Road. But you can also add a Christmas ornament, like Christmas bells, reindeer or snowman, whatever takes your fancy.

Add tinsel and gold for quick festive Christmas wrapping | 3 ways to wrap festive Christmas gifts without Christmas paper

2. Add some Christmas bling + shine.

I love the sparkle that Christmas brings, so go happy with the tinsel and gold on your packages! Whether it’s sequins, tinsel, gold stars, or gold ribbon, all these add a fun Christmas dimension.

Use a combination of red and green for Christmas wrapping | 3 ways to wrap festive Christmas gifts without Christmas paper

3. Add Christmas colors using embellishments.

This may be the most “traditional” idea of the three. But since using a combination of red and green is sure to give a Christmas vibe, I used red patterned paper with green string to make a Christmas bunting.

There are plenty of options with these. If you like, you can even add your own twist to the traditional Christmas combination and use fuschia and teal instead. Whatever floats your boat, ya know.

3 quick and easy ways to wrap festive Christmas gifts without Christmas paper

As Christmas Day draws nearer and you hurry to get those presents done before December 25th, try these three wrapping tricks with supplies you already have on hand.

Happy wrapping!

  • Get ready for 2015.
  • De-stress.
  • YES. This is my note to self.
  • Try these Christmas DIYs, if you’re not in the Christmas spirit yet.
  • Possibly the cutest mug in town.
  • I think I need to do this next year.
  • Beautifully written.

I’m finally on Christmas break and it’s such a relief having time to do non-school related things.

It’s kinda crazy realizing that Christmas is in less than one week and how quickly the year is coming to an end after that.

But I managed to score a number of gifts at one store and ended up finishing my Christmas shopping in one fell swoop last night, so I’m pretty pleased about that. Now I just need to wrap up (no pun intended) some last-minute Christmas gifts and preparations so I hope I make it in time!

Enjoy the last weekend before Christmas, friends! xx.

Art Journaling | My top five must-have supplies

18 December 2014

5 must-have art journaling supplies (and fun extras!) for every creative person's art journal

Although the “official” Get Messy Thursdays are over for the year, I wanted to share some of my favorite supplies for art journaling.

When I first joined Get Messy, I was a little hesitant because I had never art journaled before. But the beauty of art journaling is that it can be whatever you want it to be.

So that’s what I did. I made art journaling work for me.

And now that I’ve been art journaling for a few months, I’ve discovered some favorite supplies that I find myself constantly going back to.

5 must-have art journaling supplies (and fun extras!) for every creative person's art journal

My Top Five Must-Have Art Journaling Supplies

1. Sketchbook

This is the place where all the creating happens. I use a spiral-bound sketchbook from my local stationery store.

2. Paintbrush

I like using this to create the watercolored look on my pages, which I love!

3. Black pens

My current favorites are a fine Sharpie and a 0.5 ZIG marker. I find that these two pens generally write smoothly on all sorts of paper and I like keeping these on hand for quick doodles or journaling.

4. Stamps + ink

I love the variety of stamps and including them on my pages for fun details and prompts.

5. Ink + mist

I use Mister Huey’s Mist from Studio Calico as watercolor or regular mist for my art journal pages.

5 must-have art journaling supplies (and fun extras!) for every creative person's art journal

Fun Extras

Other things I love incorporating into my art journal are supplies that I already have:

– Washi tape

Yep, always.

– Chipboard, wood veneer, die cuts, enamel dots

I like the dimension that these add to my pages. But if you prefer to keep things flat, then steer away from the chipboard, wood veneer, and enamel dots. But if you don’t mind it, then go for it!

– Magazines, flyers, advertisements

Sometimes I find a well-designed ad which I love, and those find their way into my pages.

– Dried flowers

Vanessa does this beautifully, and she’s my constant inspiration for using dried flowers.

– Stickers, manila tags

MAMBI stickers are still my favorite. But really, as long as I love the sticker, I include it on my pages. Tags also add another element, and a spot for journaling.

– Patterned papers

I have too many patterned papers for my own good and art journaling helps me to use them up!

– Instax photos

Especially when those instant photos don’t turn out, like when the lighting is off or the photo is out of focus, I find that my art journal is a good place to turn those “bad” photos into a masterpiece.

Art journaling ideas by Amelia Writes

All these extra bits are really part of the fun of art journaling and creating. I’ve used all of these supplies in my Get Messy art journal pages before, in case you need ideas on how to use them.

This is my list of my must-haves and favorite supplies. But since art journaling can be anything you want it to be, I want to hear from you: What is in your list of must-have supplies? What would you add to this list?

Take the break to gather some supplies and get messy. I can’t wait to see all those pages when the all-new Get Messy returns!

Creative Conversations no. 019 | chatting with Heather Burris

17 December 2014

You know that feeling of knowing that some people are just absolutely down-to-earth and genuine even without meeting them? Heather is one of those people. I found Heather through Becky Higgins’ Creative Team this year, and I’ve loved being inspired by her heart and amazing creativity. Welcome to the blog, Heather – so glad to have you!

Ameliawrites-Heatherburris-profile

Tell me about yourself. I’m Heather, I’ve been married to my high school crush for three years and we currently live in North Carolina. I clean houses for money, but for fun I’m a writer, amateur photographer, and paper crafter.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? My sister and I taught ourselves how to ride unicycles ten years ago. It’s my cardio workout of choice.

ameliawrites-heatherburris (8 of 10)

What do you do to express your creativity? I have a lot of creative outlets, and sometimes it’s hard to know which to focus on, to pour myself into. But photography, writing, scrapbooking, art journaling – it’s all related. It’s all about storytelling. So, whatever medium I’m using, I like to think that at the end of the day I’m simply a storyteller.

ameliawrites-heatherburris (6 of 10)

Who or what inspires you? I am not a musical person in any way, shape or form (I once faked my way through an entire middle school band concert.) But music is my biggest inspiration. It alters my mood and gets the creative juices flowing. My musical taste is incredibly boring, though; I’m all about Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. Mom music, basically.

Why do you do what you do? I ask myself this a LOT. But even when it’s hard, making art makes me feel more like myself. Writing long journal entries clears my head, taking a great photo energizes me. Life would be so boring if I didn’t spend it making things.

ameliawrites-heatherburris (10 of 10)

What are your favorite tools or products?

  1. I have a huge stack of notebooks on my coffee table that I use for different things – an idea notebook, a journal, a photography idea book, etc.
  2. Lightroom 5. I thought photography was fun before I had editing software, and now I think editing is half the fun!
  3. Public libraries. I don’t know if this could be considered a “tool” but I love having so many resources available for free.
  4. My scrap pile. It’s full of vintage yearbook cutouts and bits of washi tape and Anthropologie catalogs. Just sifting through it is inspiring.
  5. Sharpies. They’re great.

ameliawrites-heatherburris (2 of 10)

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most creative?

I’m kind of both, at least as far as creativity goes. I am most creative when it’s dark out (rainy days are a dream!) but I can’t create to save my life on a sunny afternoon.

Thanks so much for having me, Amelia!

Be sure to follow Heather’s blog and Instagram for more inspiring posts and photos. Don’t miss out!

Project Life | plans for 2015

15 December 2014

Great ideas for documenting life in 2015 using Project Life.

Despite my initial 2014 Project Life plans and catch-up strategy, I am still barely one-quarter way through this year’s album, but I’m planning to get it done. Although I’d prefer to finish it sooner rather than later.

But with 2015 creeping up on us, I’m looking ahead to my plans for next year…

Things I’ll do the same

  • 12×12 albums – I love all the space that 12×12 gives me for documenting everything that I need to, especially when the week gets busy, so no change here. I’ll be using these We R Memory Keepers faux leather ring albums. I ordered them earlier this month and I can’t wait for them to arrive! I’ve heard lots of good things about them, and the colors are lovely, so I’m pretty excited.
  • Weekly format – I did consider moving to a monthly format since not all our weeks are very exciting. But I love the structure of the weekly format so I’m sticking to that.
  • Standard weekly title cards – I will keep these consistent throughout the year, because I really enjoyed having one less thing to think about. But I will probably switch up the design of these for next year. The question is – to what?
  • Design A page protectors – I like having the predictability of having standard designs so far. Boring? Maybe. Less stress for me? Definitely. I’m absolutely open to changing things up during the year if I need to though.
  • Continue with weekly journaling – At the end of each week, I usually try to make notes of everything that happened. This is such a life-saver, especially when I need to play catch-up. It’s also super helpful for putting my spreads together and helping me with having more journaling.
  • Use the kits and 6×6 paper pads that I already have – The big goal is to try not to add any more of these! I love including a mix of kits and paper pads, but I already have quite the collection so I’m remembering to be selective and use what I already have.
  • Use inserts if I need to – Since I’m planning to spread out my year into two albums, I’ll add inserts if/when I need to. They’re also great because I don’t feel confined to just the two standard pages.
  • Work in batches – I used this strategy, especially when I needed to do major catch up. But I love it in general just for completing my spreads.

Great ideas for documenting life in 2015 using Project Life.

Things I’ll do differently

  • Gather standard supplies for weekly spreads – I think I’ve more or less figured out what my go-to supplies for Project Life are. Now I just need to put them all in one place for easy access and quick creating.
  • Do better at uploading, editing and printing photos – I do this fairly regularly now, but still not as routinely or consistently as I’d like to be.
  • Include more journaling – I have my week-in-review cards, which I love. But I want to include more stories and contexts for the photos that are going into the albums.
  • Include more perspectives from the rest of my family – I’m not sure how I’m going to do this yet, but I think it would be really neat to have stories told from their perspective as well. Suggestions, anyone?
  • Stay on track – Since I’m still playing catch-up for 2014, I’m far too familiar with the feeling of being behind. I’m going to work on keeping up as much as possible next year, for sure.
  • Try using square photos. Because I print at a printer, printing square photos means just a little more work for me. But square photos are still super trendy so I really want to try it at least once just to see how I like it.
  • Go hybrid – There are so many great digital kits out there (like Rachel’s, Peppermint’s, and Liz’s) so I certainly won’t be able to resist including those in my albums. Plus, they don’t take up space like physical kits do, so I can make an exception in using them, right? I’m not super tech-savvy so I don’t think I’ll be doing anything mind-blowing with the digital kits. But I want to use a mix of digital products and physical kits next year.

I love how flexible Project Life is and how easily you can change things to make them work for you. See what Andrea, Carly, Caylee, Rachel, Kellie, and Kelsey are doing for their Project Life next year.

I can’t wait to document 2015.

Tell me, what are your plans for memory-keeping next year?

  • White and bright inspiration
  • For mornings.
  • I can relate.
  • So fun and cute.
  • Love the concept of this book.
  • Time to get wrapping!
  • Cool memory-keeping idea for next year.

As I wrap up my final assignments for the year, I am counting down the hours until Christmas break and I can’t wait! It’s been a long year and I am really looking forward to finally getting a breather.

This weekend is going to be a good one. I can feel it.

Happy Friday, friends! xx.

30 Day Habit Challenge | 9 things I learned

10 December 2014

Ameliawrites-habitlessons

I made it.

Last month, I embarked on a challenge to form the habit of waking up early for thirty days and I finally finished the month.

It wasn’t easy, and I didn’t do it perfectly. But I’m glad that I did this.

And I definitely learned some lessons along the way.

1. Start small.

My first goal was to wake up before 8 am. As the habit challenge progressed, I adjusted my goal to wake up before 730 am. I struggled with this one a little bit more but I’m getting there.

2. Be accountable.

Caylee and I emailed each other during the month. It was helpful for me to have an accountability partner and know that I was not alone. Caylee gave lots of encouragement, which helped me to stay motivated during the month.

I also told my mom about my habit challenge so she would wake me up if I still wasn’t out of bed when I needed to be.

3. Don’t make excuses.

This was especially true for me on days when I missed my alarm by just a couple of minutes. I had to constantly remind myself that it was better to wake up a couple of minutes late, than to give up and waste more time sleeping in, since “I woke up late” anyway. No excuses.

4. Weekends are the toughest.

I struggled the most on the weekends when I was tempted to sleep in, or catch up on sleep. I tried to push through it as much as possible but wasn’t always successful.

Ameliawrites-habitlessons

5. If you miss a day, don’t let yourself get discouraged.

But also, try not to miss two days in a row.

I read that you shouldn’t miss two days in a row because it breaks your habit. But at some point, it happened and I did miss two days, especially over the weekends (I told you they were hard!).

When that happened, I had to focus on my next point.

6. Remember your goal.

My planning from Tiago Forte’s Skillshare class came in handy as I progressed and when things became discouraging. I needed to look back on my plan and remind myself that some progress is better than none and that I am doing better now than I was in the beginning.

Even if you fail, figure out what went wrong and try again.

7. Sleep early to wake up early.

In so many ways, the success of tomorrow depends on today. That means planning for tomorrow the night before, and sleeping early so I could wake up early the next day.

Since I was accustomed to sleeping late, making this adjustment was hard for me. It’s still something I’m working on, and some nights I sleep later than others, but I’m more conscious about getting to bed earlier, instead of working through the night to get work done.

8. There will be good days and bad days.

And since life isn’t perfect, the good and bad days will come and learning to adjust your habit as life happens is necessary. The point of this challenge is not to be perfect, but to create a habit that is sustainable and long-term. So keep that in mind as the month progresses.

9. Listen to your body.

I was fighting the flu for the final few days of this habit so I didn’t finish the month as well as I would’ve liked. But I listened to my body and gave myself the extra rest. Ultimately, I had to figure out what worked for me and my lifestyle, not simply what everyone else did.

Ameliawrites-habitlessons

Looking back on the past month, I don’t think my habit is thoroughly ingrained yet and waking up early isn’t as automatic as I would like for it to be. But it’s definitely much easier than when I first started and I’ve made progress since the beginning. So I’m happy about that and would consider this past month a success!

What are my plans going forward? I definitely want to keep continue incorporating early waking into my daily routine and let my body adjust to waking up at an even earlier time in the coming months.

I won’t be trying a new habit in December, but I’m already thinking about the next habit I want to build in January when the New Year arrives.

Did you do this habit challenge too? What did you learn during the month? Let me know in the comments!

25 things to do this Christmas

9 December 2014

Ameliawrites-25thingstodothisChristmas

Here in Singapore, it doesn’t always look or feel like Christmas because it doesn’t snow or get too cold. Instead, we get lots of rain and unpredictable weather. There are definitely no white Christmases on this side of the world.

That said, nothing is going to stop me from counting down the days to Christmas and getting into the Christmas spirit!

This season is definitely one of my favorite times of the year. There is so much to love about this season – from the spirit of giving, to remembering that Jesus is the reason for the season.

It’s time to start embracing the magic, joy and wonder of Christmas.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite things to do around this time of the year:

  1. Go to a local Christmas market.
  2. Attend a Christmas service.
  3. Bake Christmas cookies.
  4. Share said Christmas cookies with neighbors.
  5. Read the Christmas story.
  6. See the Christmas lights in town.
  7. Watch a Christmas movie.
  8. Throw a Christmas party.
  9. Drink hot chocolate.
  10. Have your own Christmas photo shoot.
  11. Hand make Christmas cards.
  12. Send said Christmas cards.
  13. Go Christmas caroling.
  14. Go Christmas shopping and wrap Christmas presents.
  15. Decorate your home and make it look festive.
  16. Photograph your Christmas decorations and traditions.
  17. Journal your thoughts about Christmas.
  18. Start one new tradition.
  19. Donate something you love to someone who needs it more.
  20. Text a friend whom you haven’t talked to in awhile.
  21. Make a playlist of your favorite Christmas songs.
  22. Try a new Christmas recipe.
  23. Try the Christmas selection at your favorite café.
  24. Have a Christmas gift exchange.
  25. Start a Christmas jar.

What will you be doing to get into the Christmas spirit this December? Let me know in the comments!

Project Life week 16 | Amelia Writes

Continuing with the pages I promised to share, here is week 16 with all the details!

Week of: 14 to 20 April, 2014

What happened this week: A girls’ day out, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.

Attach memorabilia with a paper clip in Project Life pages | Amelia Writes

I layered one of One Little Bird’s Hopscotch cards over a Project Life card and used a paper clip to attach a receipt.

Techniques: Again, nothing particularly new or fancy here because I just want to get caught up! So I’m keeping things simple as much as possible, and going to back to things I’ve tried and know I love.

That includes using vellum over screenshots of Whatsapp conversations, email messages, and tweets, Roundabout days tags from Paislee Press and that “Today I am Thankful” sticker from MAMBI, which I stuck on a piece of vellum before laying it over my screenshots. (I also used these similar techniques here in Week 10).

Thoughts: Compared to Week 15, I had darker colors and photos this week. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed including memorabilia from our week, like that Shrove Tuesday name card and receipt.

Another week in the books!
