Creative Conversations no. 002 | chatting with Sarah Alberto

23 April 2014

I loved seeing all the responses to the very first Creative Conversation. Thank you for sharing my excitement about this series! Today, I am excited to welcome Sarah for our conversation. I stumbled upon Sarah’s Instagram account a couple of months back and I love how her personality just shines through all that she does – she is so down-to-earth and sweet. I always love seeing the innovative and creative ideas she comes up with for all her projects. Welcome to the blog, Sarah!

sarah-alberto

Tell me about yourself. I’m a stay-at-home mum of 2 who loves geeky stuff and all things crafty. I also have a cat named Streaky. Things that make me happy are shopping, sleeping in, sweets and stationery. I am a big fan of The Walking Dead, Batman and Doctor Who.

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? Something interesting would be that before my kids were born, I used to work in day care. I teach and take care of Pre-schoolers. There’s a story behind that! I have studied 4 different degrees because I had trouble finding what I really wanted in life. And the last course that I took was to be able to work in a child care centre. I have always wanted to work with children because I wanted to share my ideas and express my creative side. I guess all those years of studying paid off. One day, I want to illustrate and write my own children’s book.

What do you do to express your creativity? I like to make pretty things such as card making, collages and I also love to draw.

washicards1

How did you get started doing this? I like doing DIY projects but after having baby number 2 I got a little lazy. I got back into doing arts and crafts when I stumbled upon Washi tapes. I saw it on Pinterest one day and then started collecting. Then I joined the Filofax and Project Life community on Instagram and from there I got even more inspired.

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I love sharing my ideas and my work with people who appreciate it.

Who or what inspires you? My biggest inspiration are my kids I get some of my ideas based on my experiences with them. I also adore my Instagram friends in the Filofax, Project Life and Snail mail community – who I consider the most talented people in the world.

sarah-alberto1

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? I stay inspired by trying out different things. I usually get ideas in the strangest places like when I’m in the shower or when I am folding clothes. When I’m stuck the first thing I do is check Pinterest for ideas. You can never go wrong with Pinterest! I don’t force myself to work on something if I don’t feel like it. Sometimes, it will take me months to start again but once I get started I don’t stop for a week or two.

mailart1

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I do this because I love it. I am attracted to paper and making things. I have always enjoyed arts and crafts. I was never an ‘academic’ or a sporty kind of person. When people say I inspire them, it motivates me and encourages me to do better.

Describe your creative style. I am spontaneous (but I always like to keep it simple). When I have the spur-of-the-moment ideas, I am itching to do it right away. I usually just throw in different designs and mediums and mix them all together. Sometimes it also depends on my mood. Making crafty things is my way of escaping the real world. It’s my little happy place.

sarah-alberto4

Name your top five favourite tools or products.

  1. Washi Tape – I include washi tape in everything I do! It’s such a versatile item.
  2. Journaling cards – Project Life and Me and my BIG ideas are my favourite.
  3. Paper trimmer – Because I can’t cut straight! Lol
  4. Stamps
  5. A black pen – For me it is the equivalent of a Little Black Dress! 😀

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? I am both. I usually try to do my work when I have free time (like when my kids are asleep). But I do find myself most productive in the morning because my mind is awake.

What project(s) are you currently working on? I am currently into making Pen pal Booklets and I am trying to finish my Project Life album about my son.

sarah-alberto3

If you had to be a colour in a crayon box, which colour would you be? I would say Yellow because yellow is a happy colour and I am a cheerful and easy going person. 🙂  I also asked my husband what colour he thinks I am and he said, Sky Blue. It’s because I am a very patient person.

sarah-alberto2

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Before I would always say the ability to fly so I can see places. But now that I am a mum, I would want to be able to multiply myself so I can do several things at the same time.

What is your favourite quote? “Look for something positive in each day. Even if some days you have to look a little harder. Let the challenged make you stronger.”

Follow Sarah on her blog, Instagram and Pinterest to continue seeing her creative ideas – you will love them!

Thank you for joining us today and for being a part of this series, Sarah! So glad to have you!

Creative Conversations no. 001 | chatting with Vanessa Perry

9 April 2014

I’m so excited to welcome Vanessa to kick start the Creative Conversations series today! I first “met” Vanessa through Instagram and I was so blown away by her amazing calligraphy and creativity. Seriously, her handwriting is amazing, and it looks even better in real life. I’m so grateful that she agreed to be a part of this series and for the friendship that we’ve formed through Instagram. It’s so inspiring seeing her creative work and I’m sure you’ll be just as inspired!

vanessa-perry-001

Tell me about yourself. I’m Vanessa. And my last name is Perry, not “documented,” haha. I’m 25, and I live in sunny southern California. I am a Project Life enthusiast and I like to dabble in handlettering (calligraphy and brush script).

What is one weird or interesting fact about you? When I drive alone in my car, I belch* out my best version of Adele. My best performances include steering wheel drums. 🙂

* yeah, I’m tone deaf.

What do you do to express your creativity? I work on my Project Life album, calligraphy, and brushscript.

vanessa-perry2

How did you get started doing this? What a great question! I can probably trace the beginnings of my creativity all the way to elementary school when I fell in love with painting, so much so that I spilled paint all over my overalls. (Sure sign of an artist in the making – paint on overalls.) Haha!

But to really answer the question:
Throughout my life, I have always loved paper crafts and mixed media. My boyfriend alone has three scrapbooks, a Moleskine of doodles, and a Smashbook. I started creating for myself while I was going through a personal difficult time last year. It first began when I started taking pictures of things that made me happy and I discovered Project Life as way of documenting/scrapbooking, which taught me to really pay attention to the details in my every day moments. Around the same time, I also picked up a paintbrush and started painting words. This peaked my interest in handlettering, which led to calligraphy and brush script. All these things were my own form of therapy. Ever since then, I’ve just become really passionate about being creative.

What do you love most about what you do to be creative? I enjoy the process – having to rummage through all my materials to find the right embellishments, making a mess, changing my mind a million times on a layout, thinking of the right way to honor a memory, practicing calligraphy. The hard work adds to the satisfaction of completing a project.

vanessa-perry6

Who or what inspires you? Easy. Happiness inspires me. If something or someone makes me happy, I have to remember it. A quote, a photograph, a souvenir, something that takes me back to that moment and how I felt.

How do you stay inspired? What do you do when you feel stuck or uninspired? Go outside, do something, make plans, have a conversation. I have to keep my senses heightened to feed myself inspiration.

When I feel like I haven’t been creative lately, I get out all my supplies and play around with them until I can put something together. I know when I’m stuck when a layout or a spread just isn’t cutting it out for me. I have to walk away, take a nap, or go on a run. Refuel myself; think about my vision and how I want to execute it.

vanessa-perry3

Why do you do what you do? What motivates you to be creative? I want to inspire, the same way being creative inspired me.

Describe your creative style. Simple with a few surprises. There is nothing too complex about my work, but I do like adding one detail that adds a special touch, something to be remembered.

vanessa-perry1

Name your top five favorite tools or products. In no particular order:

  1. Studio Calico wood veneers. – They’re on every single one of my spreads.
  2. The Project Life Midnight Edition core kit. – The neutrals make it easy to pick and choose cards to match my photos, I don’t have to worry too much about coordinating because neutrals match everything.
  3. Vellum. – I love printing on vellum to add a layer of journaling.
  4. Manuscript Leonardt nibs – I know the best nibs can be ordered online, but I haven’t ordered any off of my wishlist yet. These ones can be found at Michaels and I’ve been enjoying them for practicing.
  5. Studio Calico February Sugar Rush kit – I’m not a subscriber (yet), but I ordered February’s kit out of curiosity. It blew my mind and I might just be getting April’s kit. Studio Calico puts out some good stuff and I love that the kits come with coordinating embellishments; it makes it easier to put together a spread. I’m definitely a fan of SC.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? When are you most productive? Night owl, definitely.

What project(s) are you currently working on? I’m currently working on Project Life for 2014 and a hybrid scrapbook/ art journal.

vanessa-perry4

If you had to be a color in a crayon box, which color would you be? Mint green.

If you could possess a super power, which one would you choose? Teleportation, makes for easy traveling.

What is your favorite quote? I don’t have a favorite of all time, but this one by Oscar Wilde has been speaking to me lately: “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

Be sure to follow Vanessa on her blog, Instagram and Pinterest to keep being inspired by her creative work.

Thank you for joining us today, Vanessa! It’s been such a pleasure having you.

creative-conversations-introduction

In a world where we’re constantly connected by our gadgets, having a conversation with someone can be a beautiful, sometimes rare, thing.

But I’m so thankful for the opportunities that I’ve had to make new friends through places like Instagram. So in an effort to get to know the people that I’ve connected to, been inspired by and become friends with through the inter-webs, I’m pleased to announce the new Creative Conversations series!

I’ve asked my friends from all over the world to be a part of this and I’m so grateful that they agreed to! They’ll be sharing their creative processes, random facts about themselves, and much more! I’m so excited to begin this and I can’t wait to introduce the first person in the series to you.

I’ll be featuring the first Creative Conversation tomorrow so remember to check back and join in the conversation!

Valentine’s Day | love notes

6 February 2014

With just a little over a week to Valentine’s Day, it’s time to get cracking on those Valentine’s Day notes!

Truth be told, I’m not into Valentine’s Day at all. But I do love any excuse to print and use cute printables to share with my family and friends.

There are plenty of Valentine’s Day ideas floating around Pinterest. But I loved these printables and printed them out pronto. Here’s a bonus – they’re free! So grateful for people who share their creativity on the internet at no cost.

But I will, as soon as I get my hands on more paper.

I hope your day is lovely indeed!

Thankful…

28 November 2013

I couldn’t find the image source – if anyone knows, please let me know!

Each year, I am reminded of how much I have to be thankful for:

For faith, love, family, friendship, God’s provision each moment of each day, all-sufficient grace, the ability to see the world, to laugh and appreciate life…

And the list is just beginning.

This year, I’m remembering to cultivate the habit of being grateful. Not just on Thanksgiving, but every day. Because when I truly stop and think about it, I know I can count my blessings in abundance.

I hope you remember it too.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Beginning with Mondays

28 October 2013

you'll get there.

To be honest, I haven’t come up with a complete makeover plan for this blog. It’s all still kind of up in the air and whatnot. But I missed being around here too much that I decided to (officially) come back anyway. After all, this space (as with most things in life) is still a work in progress.

This semester is proving to be pretty crazy busy. Four classes and tons and tons of reading. I’m not even kidding. But that’s what college life is all about, isn’t it?

So despite the piles of reading and assignments that need to get done, I’m starting the week reminding myself, Small steps every day.

Beginning with today.

And as my philosophy professor says, I should handle all this work like how I would eat an elephant – one bite at a time. Uh-huh.

Here’s to a super-productive and nothing-less-than-amazing week! (:
