I am not an artist – 3 life lessons from art

2 March 201630 April 2016

3 life lessons from art

“I am not an artist.”

That was the thought that ran through my mind as I attended an Art + Drawing Professional Learning Course (PLC) at my school. As I glanced around at the other participants’ work, I was convinced that my drawings looked nothing like how they should’ve.

After all, whenever I think of an artist, I think of someone who is artistically inclined and amazingly talented, goes to art school, is an art student, and knows what to do with the beautifully large array of art supplies in the art store, of which I just go crazy over, but have no idea what to do with.

Since I don’t consider or identify myself as an artist, I was hesitant to attend the art and drawing PLC when it was announced. But since my colleagues were attending, I signed up eventually.

5 tips to help your productivity skyrocket

24 February 20165 March 2016

Tired of unproductivity? Skyrocket your productivity with these five tips

Admittedly, I am a productivity junkie who enjoys reading all sorts of productivity posts and how tos. And when you realize that time is limited and life continues to spin away, productivity becomes a huge part of getting work done quickly and efficiently, while still leaving time for relaxing and building relationships.

With the number of articles I’ve read and podcasts I’ve listened to on productivity, here are my top five favorite tips for being productive and getting things done.

1. Sleep

I always knew sleep was important. But listening to this podcast brought my understanding of the importance of sleep to a whole new level. Never underestimate the power of a good night’s rest. Sometimes, not getting enough sleep can feel like a badge of honor, since it’s easy to boast about how little sleep we’re getting and still be able to accomplish things (also maybe because it gives an excuse to tell others to cut us some slack?). However, getting sufficient quantity and quality sleep is crucial to having a productive day. These articles also articulate well the importance of sleep and why it is so crucial to productivity.

2. Single-task

Have you heard about the wonders of multi-tasking? It seems like I’ve heard more about the truth of single-tasking and the myth of multi-tasking. Because while multi-tasking feels productive, it’s actually detrimental to productivity.

As difficult as it might be to actually do, single-tasking helps your brain to give 100% to whatever the task at hand is, instead of quickly switching back and forth between multiple tasks (and here’s what it does to your brain). So you can get things done better and quicker, and move on to other things as soon as possible.

3. Stop procrastinating and remove distractions

(For some, this may also mean, put away your phone!)

This comes alongside my point above. Sometimes, you want to procrastinate and distract yourself by doing multiple tasks or checking your phone, instead of staying focused and just doing what you need to. Push through the discomfort of a task, put away your phone, and commit to doing what you need to. If you need to, set a timer like how I learned to, and watch your productivity skyrocket!

4. Make a list and plan, plan, plan.

I’ve always been a list maker, but I’ve recently discovered even more acutely the need for planning and making lists. I cannot say this enough. I don’t know about you, but not having a list causes my brain to focus on all the “one million tasks” I seemingly have and end up becoming easily overwhelmed. If you need a starting point, try daily downloading or morning pages. Intentionally planning and making a list allows for better focus on the tasks at hand to stay focused and avoid distractions (see point above).

5. Build rituals/routines.

This could be a whole post of its own (it’s coming!) but whatever you want to call it, develop a predictable, daily pattern that will help you to look ahead at a day with confidence because you already know what is going to happen. Your daily routine may mean getting daily exercise, checking email at fixed times, getting enough sleep by sleeping early (see point above) – the sky’s the limit! Just do what works for you. Having daily routines/rituals helps you get your day off to a good start by setting the right tone, and allows you to efficiently maximize every part of your time throughout the day.

And since you do, you can thoroughly maximize every single part of the day to make your time most effective.

What is one thing you will change or do to increase your productivity today?

  • Yay for these beautiful cards.
  • Can’t wait to make these to satisfy my chocolate cravings.
  • Interesting thoughts on not going paperless.
  • Yes to everything on this list.
  • Watercolor tips + cute cards just in time for Valentine’s Day.

To be honest, I was a bit hard-pressed for favorite links that I really liked this week.  I might attribute it to the fact that I didn’t spend much time on the internet at all this week, which may not be a bad thing. But after a little big of digging around, I actually quite enjoyed these links – hope you do too!

And while this weekend is a lot quieter than it was last week, I’m soaking it in anyway.

Hope you have a rad one xx.

5 ways to show love to people in your life

10 February 201611 February 2016

Love doesn't have to be flowers and chocolates. Discover 5 ways to show love to people in your life, this Valentine's Day and all year round.

With the main Chinese New Year festivities behind us, it seems that the next “holiday” is Valentine’s Day. While Valentine’s Day has never been a much-celebrated holiday around here, I like to use it as a time to reflect on how I show love to the people in my life and how much they mean to me.

Since the mention of Valentine’s Day typically evokes images of flowers and chocolate, I challenged myself and discovered five ways to show love, sans your typical Valentine’s Day items.

I might add that if your loved one enjoys flowers and chocolate, I say go for it! But if you’re looking for some more unconventional ideas, here you go!

Ways to show love (without flowers and chocolate)

  1. Spend time.

Sometimes, the greatest gift and demonstration of love is just spending quality time with them. Plan a fun day, intentionally disconnect from social media, and enjoy being in the company of those you love.

  1. Write a thoughtful note.

It doesn’t have to be long or cheesy. Just a meaningful, handwritten note expressing your appreciation for your loved one and how much they mean to you can go a long way. You can make your own quick and easy ones, or print some fun ones online.

  1. Cook a meal / bake something.

Food connects people. And if your loved one enjoys food, there is no better way to show them your love than to make or bake their favorite meal or food.

  1. Listen.

In this day and age of instant gratification, many distractions, and short-attention spans, active listening is learned skill. But your willingness to put everything aside to listen to your loved one will show them how much you care.

  1. Serve them.

Find out if there’s anything that they would appreciate you helping out with, whether it’s washing the car or running some errands. Sometimes, actions dospeak louder than words and the little things go a long way.

Which way will you choose to show love this year?

Appreciating and documenting traditions (and a challenge!)

6 February 20166 February 2016

Learn to appreciate and document your traditions with these four questions.

Here in Singapore (and Asia), we’re celebrating the Chinese New Year (also called the Lunar New Year) this Monday. And for the next fifteen days after. So places and stores have been buzzing with activity and excitement as everyone makes preparations for the New Year.

I didn’t always appreciate or fully understand our traditions for the Lunar New Year. In fact, I even thought they were rather routine and annoying at some point in my younger years. Through the years, gaining an understanding of Chinese traditions and the meaning behind them has brought my appreciation of Lunar New Year to a whole new level as I start to soak in the festivities for myself.

But this year, I find myself having a brand-new appreciation for the customs and cultures of one of the biggest Chinese holidays ever, as I share them with my students and help them to understand this holiday.

While it’s easy to take traditions for granted, sharing my cultural traditions with others has made me pause and consider the traditions we’ve had for Chinese New Year for as long as I can remember. Because the thing about traditions is, you never know when they might change.

So this year, I’m taking extra notice of the traditions we have, the things we do, the food we eat, the places we go and everything in between.

Here are some things I’m thinking about as I go about my celebrations and visitations this year:

  1. Notice the yearly traditions. What are they? Are there many traditions?

Think about the details, the little things, the things that you don’t realize or notice are traditions, but actually are, because you would miss them if they weren’t there.

What food do you eat? Where do you go? Who do you spend time with? What do you do?

  1. What do you like about these traditions? Which traditions make you excited? Why do you like them?

Some of my favorite traditions include our color-coordinated outfits and our annual  DIY family photo shoot. And I love them for how they document our lives each year. Getting to visit family and friends I don’t see very often also gets me excited for all the catching up we get to do.

  1. What would you change about your traditions?

As with many things, there are some traditions you don’t like and would rather change or get rid of altogether. What are they?

  1. What new traditions would you like to start for these holidays?

There are seasons of life and some things come and go. Some traditions might work in one season, but may be unrealistic for another season. It is absolutely okay to change some traditions, do away with others, and come up with ones that are brand new just to suit the season of life that you are in.

While I don’t foresee any new traditions this year, I’m sure that there will be new ones once we move into a different season of life.

Although I may not necessarily enjoy all the cultural traditions, I definitely appreciate the values that our traditions embody and being able to share them with others gives me a deeper appreciation and better embracing of the things and traditions that make our culture unique.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF:

So now here’s the challenge – however you decide, write down your traditions, photograph them, art journal them, scrapbook them – just document them in a way that you can look back on them in twenty years and appreciate the traditions for what they were and all that they encapsulated for you at that point in life.

For me, I’m documenting our Lunar New Year traditions this week. For you, that could look totally different (depending on where you live) and you could document some seasonal traditions or holiday traditions instead.

Who’s joining me?

Project Life | Creating a spread within one hour

4 February 2016

onelittlebird-bettertogether-byameliang2-

As much as I’d like to spend all my time documenting (and then creating more!) memories, the reality is that I have way more documenting to do than I have time for (at this point).

So while I am tempted to spend hours on a spread to make things perfect, I am often much better off at least documenting my memories in a quick and simple way, than waiting to make the “perfect” layout and never getting it done.

onelittlebird-bettertogether-byameliang4-

In this month’s post for the One Little Bird blog, I shared how I challenged myself and created a Project Life spread within one hour, all with four simple steps.

I loved how this challenge forced me embrace imperfection, that “done is better than perfect” (in this case), and to make quick decisions.

Be sure to check it out here.
